The Role of Research at Mouro Capital

The Research Function is a fundamental component of Mouro Capital's thesis-driven investment strategy. It operates closely with the Investment Team to achieve essential outcomes in two primary areas: (i) providing internal support to the Mouro team by exploring new thematic areas, sourcing and executing investment opportunities, and subsequently supporting the portfolio, and (ii) generating content for external dissemination.

Your Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the investment team to develop investment theses and targeted strategies across various fintech and adjacent sectors. Conduct comprehensive market research and analyses, utilizing insights from industry experts (founders, venture capitalists, executives) to evaluate market opportunities, customer needs, and the competitive landscape. Deliverables will include reports, market maps, competitive analyses, and due diligence-ready materials.
  • Analyze and synthesize complex data to identify the strengths and weaknesses of startups, aiding the team in reaching informed convictions both thematically and regarding individual opportunities.
  • Maintain a broad awareness of trends in the venture capital and technology markets, effectively communicating insights to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Enhance existing processes and develop new ones to boost productivity in investment and due diligence activities, communications, and knowledge management.
  • Assist the team with website updates and content creation for newsletters aimed at expanding our reach within the broader ecosystem.
  • Undertake additional tasks as they arise—no two days are the same.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in reputable consulting roles (either in-house or advisory) with a proven track record of delivering high-quality market research, ideally within fintech and/or financial services or general due diligence teams.
  • Familiarity with and interest in the venture capital industry and startup ecosystem; understanding of industry jargon and basic startup metrics is essential.
  • A strong intellectual curiosity, with the ability to identify market trends and opportunities.
  • A comprehensive financial, strategic, and analytical skill set—each equally important for this role.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective articulation and communication. Proficiency in English is required; knowledge of another language is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects across various assignments and time zones.
  • Proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel (basic modeling skills).
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
