Train Service Operator

Who are we?
Great Western Railway (GWR) is dedicated to preserving one of the most esteemed railways globally. We operate some of the latest trains in the country and have ambitious plans to enhance our services. With over one hundred million passenger journeys annually, we connect individuals to more than 280 stations across the South West, from Cornwall and South Wales to London, traversing picturesque landscapes and some of the UK's premier tourist attractions.
We are committed to reshaping perceptions of train travel, empowering our diverse team of over 6,500 individuals to create exceptional experiences for our customers. Together, we aim to elevate rail travel as a unique and valued mode of transportation.
About the team?
Conductors are integral members of the On Train team, collaborating closely with colleagues from Revenue Protection, particularly our Ticket Examiners. You will also coordinate with the train driver and station personnel.
About the job?
As a Conductor, your role will be to provide an outstanding customer experience throughout the journey while ensuring the safety of all passengers utilizing GWR services. You will need to adapt to new individuals, environments, and circumstances. At GWR, we take pride in our shared values, which guide us in delivering exceptional service to our customers and supporting our communities throughout the West. While working on our trains, you will exemplify these principles and attitudes.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Acting as an ambassador for Great Western Railway by ensuring a safe journey and delivering top-notch customer service.
- Being visible to our customers, offering information and assistance in a friendly and reassuring manner.
- Managing the safety and operational aspects of the train.
- Checking and selling tickets while providing necessary information and support.
- Maintaining a safe, clean, and pleasant environment onboard.
If you can affirmatively respond to the following questions, you may be an ideal candidate for this position:
- Are you enthusiastic and proactive about delivering exceptional customer service?
- Are you committed to performing well and taking pride in presenting a professional image?
- Can you exhibit flexibility in your work schedule, including the ability to work various shifts, weekends, and holidays?
- Are you comfortable operating within a strictly regulated industry with numerous rules and procedures?
- Can you maintain composure when faced with unexpected challenges?
- A strong understanding of customer needs.
- Excellent communication abilities.
- The capacity to build relationships and work collaboratively within a team.
- Experience in front-line customer service roles.
- The confidence to handle challenging situations effectively.
This position is based at a new depot adjacent to a major station, where you will commence and conclude your shifts.
Additional information?
Shifts will include early starts and late finishes, as well as weekends and holidays. You will be expected to work an average of 35 hours per week. Starting and finishing times may occur when public transport is unavailable, so you must be able to commute independently. It is essential to reside within a 60-minute travel time of the depot.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old to apply for this position.
The Reward?
In addition to a supportive team environment and comprehensive training, all GWR employees enjoy a variety of benefits, including ongoing development opportunities, a defined benefit pension scheme, complimentary rail travel across the GWR network for you and your family, a company-sponsored healthcare plan, discounts on shopping and gym memberships, and an employee assistance program.
We all belong at GWR. Our vision is to foster an inclusive environment for all colleagues, ensuring equal opportunities for all candidates to access meaningful employment. We value diversity in age, gender, LGBTQIA, ethnicity, religion, and disability. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of prejudice against our colleagues, customers, and future talent.
We celebrate and encourage diverse perspectives, innovative working methods, and the growth and success of all our colleagues.
We review all roles and job descriptions to ensure accessibility and, where feasible, support flexible working arrangements. We recommend referring to each vacancy description for further details.
If you require additional support to complete your application due to a disability or neurodivergent condition, we encourage you to communicate any specific needs to ensure a fair and equitable application process.
