Position Overview

An outstanding opportunity exists for a permanent Band 4 Radiation Assurance Support Specialist within the Imaging Physics and Radiation Protection division. You will collaborate with a team of professionals to deliver technical and scientific assistance in providing radiation safety services across various healthcare institutions.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be tasked with supporting operations within the Imaging Physics and Radiation Protection division.

This role will necessitate the execution of operational protocols and will require strong organizational capabilities and a foundational understanding of radiation safety to facilitate quality assurance evaluations, personal dosimetry services, and other essential departmental functions.

Job Duties

Position Title: Radiation Assurance Support Specialist (Imaging Physics and Radiation Protection)
Grade: Band 4

Reporting to: Head of Clinical Technology

The Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering department is responsible for providing scientific support and guidance in the use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, as well as medical devices. This department consists of four specialized groups: Imaging Physics, Radioisotope Physics, Clinical Engineering & Clinical Measurement, and Scientific Computing & Operations.

The Scientific Computing & Operations Group offers scientific computing services, manages quality assurance and governance systems, and creates a framework to foster innovation and operational services across the Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering department.

This group is responsible for frontline IT support, leading software development initiatives, and establishing policies and procedures for safe scientific computing practices.

Additionally, the group oversees the implementation of the quality management system and provides training and support to the department. It also manages the Trust's radiation assurance program, which includes departmental compliance audits, research assurance, and incident management related to radiation.

Job Summary: The incumbent will assist with technical business support functions within Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering and Radiotherapy Physics. This role will involve the implementation of operational procedures and will require a high level of organizational skills and knowledge of business management systems in a scientific context, providing support for quality assurance, radiation safety, governance, and incident management.

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Assuming daily responsibility for supporting radiation research assurance.
  2. Facilitating scientific and technical services related to radiation and computing within Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering.
  3. Assisting with operational management services within the department.
  4. Supporting departmental audits and the quality management system in accordance with established policies.
  5. Contributing to the delivery of personal dosimetry services and radioisotope ordering.
  6. Supporting the department's continuing professional development program.

In addition, the candidate will be expected to:

  1. Prioritize and manage their workload effectively to meet agreed objectives.
  2. Foster positive working relationships across the department to maintain quality standards.
  3. Engage in research and development activities within the department.
  4. Participate in the department's audit program.
  5. Provide training to other staff in their area of expertise.
  6. Maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all personnel within the department and the wider Trust.

Compliance with departmental policies and procedures is essential, and the candidate will be expected to participate in the development and routine operation of these processes. The role may involve occasional physical tasks, including the handling of equipment.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Educated to diploma level or equivalent qualification, or possesses relevant training and experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in providing operational support, preferably in scientific and technical services.
  • Familiarity with electronic quality management systems.
  • Proficiency in using software applications such as Excel, Word, and Access.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Full UK Driving License.
