About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Biomedical Scientist to lead a team of staff in a section of our department, providing a comprehensive and high-quality laboratory medicine service to all our clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and participate in the routine processing of specimens, allocating work to other BMS and MLA staff to ensure a smooth workflow.
  • Ensure that for each sample, the appropriate requested investigations are performed in a timely manner.
  • Handle specialised and urgent specimens appropriately.
  • Participate in technical work as required.
  • Maintain and ensure the safe use of equipment.
  • Assist in developing rotas in conjunction with other senior biomedical staff, ensuring they are operated correctly, and liaise with other senior BMS staff to provide continuous cover from the start of each day.
  • Coordinate adequate supplies of laboratory consumables and reagents, and manage their stock control.
  • Contribute to audit activities.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Be involved in staff recruitment for Medical Laboratory Assistant and Biomedical Scientist grades, and conduct appraisals as required.
  • Undertake method development and evaluation as directed by the departmental manager, with input into service development.
  • Deputise for the departmental manager as required.
Person Specification
  • Qualification in pathology disciplines consistent with State Registration requirement.
  • MSc or equivalent experience in a relevant subject.
  • Current registration with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Ability to work accurately, neatly, and efficiently, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Basic keyboard skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently in English.
  • Use of laboratory equipment relevant to the specialty.
  • Experience of utilising statistical analysis software.
  • Ability to write and review SOPs.
  • Experience of working in a routine diagnostic laboratory.
  • Demonstrate experience of working to a laboratory Quality Management System proficiency in relevant techniques.
  • Minimum 3 years HCPC registration.
  • Experience of using a Laboratory Information System.
  • Experience of supervising staff.
