Job Overview
BBC Local delivers a diverse range of content across online, television, radio, on-demand, social media, and mobile platforms for audiences throughout England. Our mission is to reflect society in all its facets—providing impartial news and current affairs while showcasing local stories, talent, and creativity. The demand for local programming and content on all our platforms is stronger than ever.
Our local TV 1830 news programs are the most viewed news programs in the UK. We are ambitious about the future of BBC Local and aim to ensure that our multimedia service operates effectively across the BBC's mobile portfolio, including BBC Sounds, iPlayer, BBC News, and BBC Sport.
The Senior News Editor for the West Midlands reports to the regional Senior Head of Production and is responsible for leading the delivery of high-quality and engaging journalism across online/mobile, television, and radio.
Main Responsibilities
The Senior News Editor oversees an integrated, multimedia news operation across multiple local bases. You will set the standard for promoting and fostering a collaborative team culture focused on delivering value to all audiences across our platforms.
In this role, you will ensure the delivery of outstanding, distinctive journalism when and where the audience desires it—across online/mobile, on-demand, television, radio, and social media. Our goal is for the BBC to serve both new and existing audiences while cultivating new habits across live and on-demand services. You will lead a process of organizational and continuous change to establish and embed a 'digital-first' news operation where all news teams collaborate for the benefit of our audiences.
You will manage and inspire production teams across multiple sites to deliver creative and innovative content, ensuring that programs and content meet audience objectives while enhancing workforce diversity to reflect the full spectrum of local life and communities on air.
Collaboration with the Head of Production, other Senior News Editors, and Executive Editors is essential as part of a multimedia leadership team within the region. You will act as an ambassador for the BBC, working closely with peers and the regional Senior Head of Production to develop and deliver shared programs that engage local audiences across various broadcast areas, ensuring effective collaboration between audio and news teams.
You will ensure that audience data and insights inform story choices and treatments, with innovation and visual storytelling shaping daily output.
Are You the Right Candidate?
- To excel in this role, you must adapt to ongoing business changes and inspire others to do the same through effective leadership. You will support career development and talent retention while serving as a role model for your teams and colleagues.
- You should demonstrate exceptional editorial judgment with experience in delivering impactful and original journalism, making challenging editorial decisions, and handling legal sensitivities under pressure.
- Experience in creative production and complex editorial decision-making is essential, along with the ability to anticipate and develop creative content in response to evolving audience habits.
- We seek a leader with a proven track record of fostering a positive, engaged, and supportive team culture, along with a demonstrated ability to collaborate and build strong relationships. Excellent communication and influencing skills are necessary, with experience in managing complex relationships and achieving outcomes through a culture of collaboration, dialogue, and engagement at all levels.
About the BBC
The BBC is dedicated to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the organization for various reasons, prioritizing their applications ahead of other candidates. Priority consideration means that employees seeking redeployment will have their applications reviewed alongside those at risk of redundancy before considering individuals not at risk.

Diversity is crucial at the BBC. We foster a working environment that values and respects each individual's unique contributions, enabling all employees to thrive and reach their full potential.
We aim to attract a diverse range of talented individuals to join the BBC, whether to contribute to our programming or to fill various non-production roles. A more diverse workforce allows us to better respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.
We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion, or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
