Job Overview
The position of a hospital switchboard operator involves managing the communication systems of the facility, responding to urgent calls, and providing support to the main reception and car park intercom during off-peak hours. It is essential to be knowledgeable about emergency protocols, including fire safety, major incidents, and lockdown procedures, ensuring that all services are rendered efficiently and courteously to both internal staff and external clients. The role requires flexibility in working hours, as shifts are available around the clock, every day of the year.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will be expected to:
- Answer emergency calls within 5 seconds and respond through the messaging system.
- Handle general inquiries within 30 seconds and manage alerts for fire alarms and other departmental notifications.
- Provide out-of-hours reception support and assist with car park inquiries, payments, and taxi arrangements.

Job Duties
The successful candidate will collaborate with various staff levels, including healthcare professionals and management, as well as external stakeholders such as local authorities and emergency services. Responsibilities include:
- Efficiently managing the switchboard to ensure calls are answered promptly and directed to the appropriate departments.
- Responding to emergency situations by contacting the relevant teams and documenting actions taken.
- Assisting with reception duties and providing a welcoming service to visitors after hours.
- Managing accommodation bookings and issuing keys while ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Handling parking payments and maintaining accurate records of transactions.
- Training new staff members and supporting the administrative team as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
Candidates should possess:
- A good general education, including English and mathematics.
- Proficient IT skills, including experience with Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong communication abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations.
- Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
