This position calls for a versatile and creative Speech & Language Therapist to collaborate within a specialized Children's SLT team, focusing on assisting children and families facing communication challenges. As a newly qualified professional, you will be responsible for providing interventions and support to children experiencing various communication issues. Your role will involve assessing, diagnosing, planning, delivering, and implementing tailored support to address the specific clinical needs of each child across different environments.

Key Responsibilities

Your primary duties will include:

  • Functioning as a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist for pediatric clients across diverse community settings, including homes, educational institutions, early years facilities, and family support centers.
  • Ensuring a high standard of care for children in an environment that promotes learning for all staff members.
  • Acting in the best interests of children and their families at all times.
  • Operating as an independent practitioner, providing specialized assessment, diagnosis, and management for pediatric clients with communication disorders, within the framework of the pediatric Speech and Language Therapy team.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to ensure comprehensive care planning and intervention.
  • Contributing promptly to the assessment and review processes for Education Healthcare Plans (EHCP) for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), providing expert reports and participating in multidisciplinary meetings as necessary.
  • Delivering effective training programs for parents, caregivers, and health and social care professionals within your area of expertise.
  • Assisting in the supervision and training of less experienced Speech and Language Therapists and students.
  • Maintaining compliance with local and national standards regarding record-keeping, activity data, and caseload management.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Possession of a relevant degree or equivalent, with registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, maintaining current registration.
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialized short courses as identified by the service lead.

Desirable:

  • Training in Elklan, Lidcombe, or Hanen.
  • Membership in a special interest group.

Experience

Essential:

  • A range of experience at Band 6 level, including clinical work with children with complex communication needs and long-term conditions, reflective practice, and in-service training.
  • Proficiency in specialist skills such as PECS, Hanen, and Makaton training.
  • Experience in delivering Elklan training.
  • Experience working as part of a Speech and Language Therapy team and multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong knowledge of national and local clinical guidelines related to children with complex communication needs.
  • Good understanding of Clinical Governance and Information Management.

Desirable:

  • Additional clinical experience in a specialized pediatric setting.
  • Experience supervising students.
  • Experience contributing to assessments/reviews for SEN statements.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant national and local clinical guidelines.
  • Evidence of participation in research or audit activities.

  • Able to supervise Speech and Language Therapists and Therapy Assistants/Associate Practitioners.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including observation, listening, and empathy.
  • Able to present information clearly and logically, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and legible notes in English.
  • Professional demeanor.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed to meet service demands.
  • Possession of a clean, current driving license.
