Position Overview
At Balfour Beatty, we tackle complex challenges head-on. We invite you to join our Highways division as an Environmental Stewardship Manager . In this role, you will play a crucial part in ensuring our projects are executed with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
As the Environmental Stewardship Manager, you will oversee the implementation and delivery of our projects with a focus on environmental sustainability (ES). Collaborating closely with clients, design teams, pre-construction groups, and external stakeholders, you will ensure that ES considerations are integrated early in the planning process and accurately budgeted before construction begins. Additionally, you will ensure compliance with all relevant environmental legislation, consents, objectives, targets, and commitments throughout the project lifecycle. You will also contribute to future project proposals by ensuring environmental compliance and sustainability are prioritized and effectively estimated.

Environmental Management:
- Foster a proactive environmental culture through engagement and communication with project teams, supply chain partners, clients, and regulatory bodies.
- Update and maintain environmental management plans during project execution; approve relevant documentation in collaboration with project managers and statutory authorities.
- Recruit, train, and evaluate the performance of Environmental Advisors, Ecological Clerks of Works, Environmental Management Representatives, and Sustainability Coordinators.
- Serve as the liaison between regulatory agencies and the project team for on-site environmental matters.
- Conduct regular site inspections with construction teams to ensure adherence to environmental licenses and plans; implement corrective actions as necessary to comply with UK regulations.
- Investigate environmental incidents and near misses to identify root causes and disseminate lessons learned.
- Maintain comprehensive records of site activities, environmental issues, and compliance efforts; provide expert advice to contractors and project team members on environmental matters.
- Review Risk Assessments and Work Package Plans to ensure they meet company standards and are appropriate for the tasks at hand.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications: Environmental Expertise
- Degree in Environmental Science or a related field (preferred) or NEBOSH Environmental Diploma or IEMA Certificate.
- Chartered Environmentalist status (preferred).
- Relevant CSCS Card.
- Valid UK driving license.
- In-depth knowledge of environmental management within the construction sector.
- Proficiency in incident investigation techniques.
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability for tasks.
- Familiarity with confidentiality protocols.
- Experience managing administrative support within an Environmental Sustainability department.
- Proven ability to lead meetings with workforce and supply chain members.
- Excellent communication skills for conveying critical safety information.
Engineering Insight
- Solid understanding of construction and civil engineering processes, including the specific requirements of heavy civil operations.
Commercial Acumen
- Understanding of budget formulation and cost definitions related to environmental issues.
Desirable Attributes
- Ability to innovate training methods and adapt communication styles to diverse audiences.
