In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that our project aligns with environmental sustainability standards. You will collaborate with clients, design teams, and external stakeholders to integrate sustainability considerations from the outset, ensuring they are effectively planned and budgeted before the construction phase. Additionally, you will ensure compliance with all relevant environmental legislation, permits, objectives, and commitments throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

- Facilitate the execution of sustainability initiatives within Balfour Beatty and National Highways

Environmental Management Duties:

  • Foster a proactive environmental culture through engagement and communication with project teams, supply chain partners, clients, and regulatory bodies.
  • Regularly update and maintain environmental management plans, ensuring the approval of relevant documentation in consultation with project managers and regulatory authorities.
  • Recruit, train, and evaluate the performance of Environmental Advisors, Ecological Clerks of Works, and Sustainability Coordinators.
  • Serve as the liaison between regulatory agencies and the project team regarding on-site environmental matters.
  • Conduct routine site inspections to ensure adherence to environmental licenses and plans, implementing corrective actions as necessary.
  • Investigate environmental incidents and near misses, applying lessons learned to improve practices.
  • Document all site activities, environmental issues, and corrective measures taken, providing expert advice to project stakeholders.
  • Review Risk Assessments and Work Package Plans to ensure compliance with company standards and regulations.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Degree in Environmental Science or a related field (preferred) or equivalent certifications.
  • Chartered Environmentalist status (preferred).
  • Relevant CSCS Card.
  • Valid UK driving license.
  • Strong grasp of environmental management within the construction sector.
  • Proficient in incident investigation techniques.
  • Demonstrated accountability and ownership of tasks.
  • Familiarity with confidentiality protocols.
  • Experience managing administrative support within an Environmental Sustainability team.
  • Proven ability to lead meetings with various stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying safety and environmental messages.

Engineering Knowledge

  • Comprehensive understanding of construction processes and the specific requirements of heavy civil operations.

Commercial Acumen

  • Insight into budget creation and cost management related to environmental issues.
