Job Summary

This position serves as a lead worker in the Foster Care, Adoption and Family Services unit, providing direct services to individuals and families. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in social work, with experience in foster care and adoption programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance and training to staff members in the Foster Care, Adoption and Family Services unit
  • Ensure staff coverage and workload balance, reviewing case files and providing back-up supervision as needed
  • Consult on complex cases, providing individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, case management, client advocacy, prevention, and education
  • Work within established policies, procedures, and guidelines, seeking supervisory assistance only in unusually complicated and difficult cases
  • Provide psychosocial support to individuals and families, ensuring that reports of suspected abuse/neglect are assigned to appropriate staff
  • Represent the agency in civil and criminal court proceedings, interpreting laws, filing petitions, and testifying before the court
  • Develop and conduct training programs for staff, interns, and other professionals in the community
  • Supervise social work interns, guiding them in their service delivery and assessing their strengths and weaknesses
Requirements
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or a Bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of experience in a Human Services area
  • Comprehensive knowledge of social work principles and practices, human behavior and motivational theory, laws, policies, and regulations relating to human services program areas
  • Ability to provide guidance and training in program areas, write court reports, home studies, evaluations, and other documents
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles, as well as the operation of a personal computer and associated software
Preferred Qualifications
  • Considerable experience in the Foster Care and Adoption programs, with completion of required training programs
  • Work experience in a leadership role, with knowledge of and experience in applying complex federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Experience in working with the Juvenile Court System, with a BSW or MSW degree and a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license desirable

  • DMV/driving record check, pre-employment drug screen, Central Registry (CPS) check, and/or criminal history search
  • Employee must be willing to work in the community emergency shelter in the event of a natural disaster or emergency
