Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled professional to join our Tobacco Dependency Team at North Middlesex University Hospital. As a Tobacco Dependency Advisor - Maternity Support Specialist, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference to patients by providing specialist advice and support to pregnant patients to help them to abstain from/quit smoking during their pregnancy and beyond.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide individualized stop smoking support to pregnant patients in a flexible and innovative way.
  • Work closely with the Smoke Free Midwife Champion and other members of the maternity team.
  • Act as a smoke free champion promoting the Trust's smoke free policy and smoke free message through their day-to-day work.
  • Work independently with patients, within the agreed tobacco dependence pathways, recognizing when there is a need to defer to a more senior member of staff for advice and support.
  • Ensure robust follow-up and discharge planning for the patient's ongoing tobacco dependency treatment.

North Middlesex University Hospital is one of London's busiest healthcare providers, providing hospital care and community services for the local population. Our specialist services include HIV, cardiology, blood disorders, diabetes, fertility, sickle cell and thalassemia. We also provide community services and have a dedicated 0-19 service for children and young people in the area.

Person Specification

Education & Qualifications

  • GCSE's or equivalent in subjects English and Mathematics.
  • A level or equivalent standard of education/practical experience.
  • Level 2 (NCSCT or equivalent) Stop Smoking Adviser qualification (or working towards).
  • NCSCT speciality module: Pregnancy and Post-partum.

Desirable Criteria

  • Specific Training in health promotion/behaviour change interventions.
  • NCSCT Standard Treatment Programme for Pregnant Women.
  • Very brief advice on smoking for pregnant women.

Skills and Abilities

  • Computer literacy skills including ability to use Microsoft Outlook, excel and word.
  • A good level of understanding of evidence-based practice and guidelines in relation to smoking cessation.
  • The ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with professionals/individuals from a variety of different backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with excellent spoken and written English.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload and coordinate own schedule without direct supervision.

  • Can demonstrate empathy to patients facing challenging situations.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and takes own initiative.
