London, Greater London, United Kingdom The National Archives Full time

Position Overview

This is a fixed-term opportunity aimed at developing skills in archival science and records management.

The National Archives seeks its inaugural Level 7 Apprentice in Archivist and Records Management. As an apprentice, you will engage in various organizational functions, including the transfer and preservation of governmental records for future generations, as well as facilitating public access and interaction with researchers, educational institutions, and local communities.

Role Responsibilities

Your involvement will span multiple projects, such as:

  • Records management
  • Cataloguing
  • Digitisation
  • Digital preservation
  • Assisting archive users
  • Researching
  • Developing events and exhibitions

Throughout your apprenticeship, you will acquire the necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours essential for a career in this field. This new technical training pathway, initiated in 2023, offers an alternative route for individuals facing barriers to obtaining a traditional postgraduate qualification in Archives Management.

To qualify for this apprenticeship, candidates must not possess a Level 7 or higher qualification (Master’s, PhD, or other postgraduate credentials).

The Level 7 Apprenticeship in Archivist and Records Management comprises a three-year learning phase followed by a six-month assessment period. As an apprentice, you will dedicate four days a week to hands-on work at The National Archives, complemented by one day of off-the-job learning.

We believe that archives are inclusive and vital in preserving the narratives of individuals, communities, and nations. We encourage applicants who are passionate about archives and can offer a unique perspective.

About The National Archives

The National Archives serves as the official repository for UK government records and for England and Wales, providing public access to a vast array of historical documents spanning over a millennium. Additionally, we lead the archival sector in England.

Located in a picturesque setting, The National Archives offers a collaborative work environment along with a comprehensive Civil Service benefits package, which includes flexible working arrangements, an on-site gym, and the opportunity to participate in the Civil Service Alpha Pension Scheme. We are dedicated to fostering professional growth and training for all employees.

The position will be based at The National Archives for four days a week, with the remaining day allocated for off-the-job learning. Every two months, this learning day will involve traveling to another archive in England for in-person training sessions.

Application Process

For internal applicants: Please apply through your employee Workday account.

For external applicants: Click the 'Apply at advertiser's site' button to submit your application. You will need to confirm your eligibility for the apprenticeship and respond to three application questions. Please list your previous work experience in the 'experience' section, but do not upload a full CV or cover letter.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Availability to commence the apprenticeship at the designated start date
  • Ability to undertake the apprenticeship full-time (Monday to Friday)
  • Possession of a Level 2 qualification (GCSE A*-C/9-4 or equivalent) in English and Maths
  • No existing Level 7 qualification in any subject
  • Residency in the UK for the past three years

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, The National Archives contributes towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Our generous benefits package includes pension options, access to sports and social club facilities, an on-site gym, discounted rates at our café, and opportunities for training and development.
