Heritage Records Intern

Position Overview
This is a fixed-term opportunity designed for aspiring archivists and records managers.
The National Archives is seeking its inaugural Level 7 apprentice in Archivist and Records Management. As an apprentice, you will engage in various facets of our operations, including the transfer and preservation of governmental records, ensuring they are accessible for future generations, and facilitating public engagement with researchers, educational institutions, and local communities.
Role Responsibilities
Your involvement will span multiple projects, such as:
- Records management
- Cataloguing
- Digitisation
- Digital preservation
- Assisting archive users
- Researching
- Developing events and exhibitions
Throughout your apprenticeship, you will acquire the essential Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship framework. This new technical training pathway, launched recently, offers an alternative route for individuals facing barriers to obtaining a traditional postgraduate qualification in Archives Management.
To qualify for this apprenticeship, candidates must not possess a Level 7 or higher qualification (Master’s, PhD, or other postgraduate credentials).
The Level 7 apprenticeship comprises a three-year learning phase followed by a six-month assessment period. As an apprentice, you will dedicate four days a week to hands-on work at The National Archives, complemented by one day of off-the-job learning.
We believe that archives should be inclusive, reflecting the diverse communities they represent. If you are passionate about archives and can offer a unique perspective, we welcome your application.
About The National Archives
The National Archives serves as the official repository for UK government records and those of England and Wales, providing public access to a vast array of historical documents spanning over a millennium. We also lead the archival sector in England.
Located in a scenic environment, The National Archives offers a collaborative workplace and an attractive benefits package, including flexible working arrangements, access to an on-site gym, and participation in the Civil Service Alpha Pension Scheme. We are dedicated to fostering professional growth and training for all employees.
This role will be primarily based at The National Archives, with one day each week allocated for off-the-job learning, which will involve periodic travel to other archives in England for in-person training sessions.
Application Process
For internal applicants: Please apply through your employee account.
For external applicants: To submit your application, click the designated button on this page. You will need to confirm your eligibility for the apprenticeship and respond to three application questions. Please provide a summary of your work experience in the relevant section, but do not upload a full CV or cover letter.
Eligibility Criteria
- Availability to commence the apprenticeship at the designated start date
- Ability to commit to full-time apprenticeship (Monday to Friday)
- Possession of a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths
- No existing Level 7 qualification in any subject
- Residency in the UK for the past three years
Benefits
In addition to a competitive salary, The National Archives contributes towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Our comprehensive benefits package includes pension options, access to sports and social club facilities, an on-site gym, discounted rates at our café, and opportunities for professional development.
