London, Greater London, United Kingdom King's College London Full time
About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our team at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre. As a key member of our Statistical Genetics Unit, you will be responsible for leading a research project in mental health genetics, analysing genome-wide genetic data, polygenic scores, and multi-omics data.

Working closely with our team, you will have the flexibility to develop the research question and take primary responsibility for the project. You will also provide research support to enable the team to function efficiently and deliver high-quality research.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early career postdoctoral researcher to develop research experience as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You will enhance your technical and professional skills while working within a large, supportive research group.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a research project in mental health genetics, analysing genome-wide genetic data, polygenic scores, and multi-omics data
  • Develop and implement analysis pipelines for UK Biobank data
  • Establish data sharing protocols and collaborate with the team to deliver high-quality research
  • Provide research support to enable the team to function efficiently
Requirements
  • PhD qualified in statistics, epidemiology, genetics, or related academic areas with a strong data analysis component
  • Excellent coding skills in standard languages (e.g. R) with a focus on reproducibility and open-source publishing of code
  • Experience of analysing large genetic datasets, e.g. UK Biobank or clinical studies
  • Excellent attention to detail in communication, data management, and reporting results
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Experience of writing and publishing papers as first author
  • Experience of collaborative research, supporting a wider team to achieve their goals
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience of analysis of UK Biobank on the Research Analysis Platform (RAP), or general skills in cloud computing using Jupyter notebooks and the use of Trusted Research Environments
  • Familiarity with mental health research
  • Active interest in supporting a diverse research environment

Please note that this is a PhD level role, but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances, the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate, and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
