Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity exists for a committed pharmacist to oversee, manage, and provide the pharmacy services for clinical trials at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. This role will encompass a diverse array of clinical specialties, collaborating closely with established pharmacy clinical services and technician-supported clinical trials teams, as well as engaging with clinicians and research teams. The successful candidate will also play a vital role in delivering a specialized clinical pharmacy service to patients.

Key Responsibilities

Service Management and Development

  • Lead the delivery, management, and enhancement of the pharmacy clinical trials service.
  • Participate in specialty clinical trials meetings as necessary.
  • Collaborate with research teams and the Principal Pharmacist to identify and prioritize clinical trial pharmacy services, ensuring alignment with national and local objectives.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate pharmacy clinical trials practices.
  • Provide expert guidance on trials to the Pharmacy Department and relevant clinical specialties.
  • Support the Chief Pharmacist and Clinical Director in managing clinical trials and associated projects.
  • Contribute to the organization and administration of the Pharmacy Clinical Trials team.

Clinical Trials Service (80%)

  • Oversee the provision and management of a high-quality, comprehensive specialist clinical trials pharmacy service.
  • Ensure compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and established pharmacy clinical trials procedures.
  • Critically assess clinical trial protocols to ensure feasibility and safety in collaboration with pharmacy production unit staff.
  • Calculate pharmacy support costs for clinical trial protocols, coordinating with research teams and sponsors.
  • Facilitate the setup of clinical trials, including writing and reviewing dispensing procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to protocol requirements for investigational medicinal product management.
  • Support the development of new services to deliver innovative therapies to patients.

Clinical Practice (20%)

  • Provide a high-quality, comprehensive specialist pharmacy service.
  • Demonstrate professional accountability to patients.
  • Offer specialized advice on prescribing and therapeutics in accordance with national and local guidelines.
  • Assess and verify prescriptions to ensure safe and effective medication use.
  • Monitor patient compliance and provide counseling to enhance understanding of medication.

Financial Resource Management

  • Calculate costs associated with pharmacy support for clinical trials.
  • Identify potential cost savings and efficiency initiatives related to medication use.

Human Resource Management

  • Act as a role model and mentor for junior staff.
  • Contribute to the recruitment and performance management of pharmacy staff.

Research and Development

  • Engage in research activities and integrate evidence into practice to enhance pharmacy services.

Education and Training

  • Collaborate with the Principal Pharmacist to develop training plans and materials related to Clinical Trials.
  • Deliver educational sessions to nursing, medical, and pharmacy staff on medication issues.

General Responsibilities

  • Participate in flexible working arrangements as required by service commitments.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned by senior staff.

Freedom to Act

  • Make clinical decisions in the interest of patient safety and outcomes.
  • Work independently within established guidelines and protocols.

Qualifications and Experience

  • BPharm/BSc or MPharm/MSc or equivalent.
  • Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Experience in specialist clinical pharmacy service delivery.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
