About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team at Turntide Technologies Inc. in the North East of England. As a key member of our Transport group, you will play a crucial role in designing and developing electrification systems, including energy storage, power electronics, and advanced electric motors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop clean-sheet mechanical designs for rotating electrical machines, including motors, pumps, and fans.
  • Conduct exploration, design development, prototyping, and testing of concepts to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Perform mechanical analysis of conceptual designs, identifying potential component failure modes and material strengths.
  • Build and test prototype hardware and test rigs as necessary to validate design specifications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver projects to internal or customer specifications, ensuring timely and cost-effective results.
  • Utilize best-in-class simulation software to optimize and analyze product behavior, ensuring compliance with industry quality standards.
  • Develop and maintain 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings of components and assemblies, adhering to company and industry standards.
  • Work closely with design engineers and other stakeholders to deliver programs, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration.
Requirements
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in engineering roles, with a strong background in mechanical design and development.
  • Creation of high-quality 3D models and assemblies using Autodesk Inventor.
  • Use of hand calculations and analysis software (ANSYS Mechanical, MATLAB, etc.) to validate designs.
  • Production of high-quality 2D engineering drawings, adhering to BS8888 standards.
  • Design, development, and delivery of prototype components and related tooling.
  • Appropriate selection of materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacture principles.
  • Knowledge of design analysis skills, including Design for Manufacturing, DFMEA, and PFMEA.
  • Hands-on assembly of prototype hardware.
  • Ability to understand technical requirements and their influence on design.
  • Experience working directly with customers as part of a development program.
  • Experience in working with and developing suppliers.
  • Ability to collaboratively work with other departments and present to internal stakeholders.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience with ANSYS, including static structural analysis, thermal, and modal analyses.
  • Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics.
  • Experience with rotating machines.
  • Packaging of electronic components and assemblies in mechanical enclosures.
  • Good understanding and experience of working with a wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes.
  • BOM creation and management.
  • Liaising with suppliers/manufacturers.
