The Radar and Advanced Targeting division located in Edinburgh is recognized as one of the leading manufacturers of radar, laser, and infrared countermeasure systems globally. This role has arisen during a phase of significant technological progress and business growth, with Leonardo at the forefront of designing and producing the next generation of compact and advanced lasers for new defense applications.

As an Optics and Laser Systems Engineer, you will join a specialized team responsible for developing compact and efficient solid-state laser designs. Your responsibilities will include investigating new technologies and engineering capabilities to capitalize on emerging business opportunities. You will be tasked with creating laser designs and employing computational modeling techniques to evaluate solid-state lasers, including nonlinear optical systems. Additionally, you will participate in hands-on work at Leonardo's Laser Center of Excellence Laboratories.

This role necessitates collaboration within a multidisciplinary team and presents a unique opportunity to influence the development, direction, and successful implementation of the next generation of lasers at one of the world's foremost manufacturers of advanced solid-state military lasers.

  • Experience in laser product development or research environments
  • Prior experience in managing a manufactured laser design
  • Expertise in designing, characterizing, and fabricating lasers using suitable tools
  • In-depth knowledge of laser physics and solid-state laser engineering
  • Familiarity with the mechanical and electrical components of laser systems
  • Experience in laser research, development, or production
  • Skills in technical proposal writing, project budgeting, and team leadership
  • Strong analytical and modeling skills, along with proficient laboratory capabilities
  • Understanding of fiber laser systems
  • Qualifications: Essential - Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Physics). Desirable - PhD with significant laser design components
