Leonardo, a global leader in defence electronics, is seeking a skilled Laser Systems Engineer to join its elite optics and laser development team. As a pioneer in delivering critical systems for situational awareness, electronic warfare, and surveillance, Leonardo specializes in designing and producing cutting-edge solutions for the defence sector.

The Radar and Advanced Targeting division in Edinburgh is renowned for its expertise in manufacturing radars, lasers, and infra-red countermeasure systems. This role offers a unique opportunity to be part of a specialized group responsible for creating compact and efficient solid-state laser designs.

As a Laser Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for exploring new technologies and engineering capabilities to seize emerging business prospects. Your tasks will involve developing laser designs and utilizing computational modeling techniques to analyze solid-state lasers, including nonlinear optical systems. You will also engage in practical work at Leonardo's Laser Center of Excellence Laboratories.

This position requires collaboration within a multidisciplinary team and offers a chance to shape the advancement, trajectory, and successful delivery of the next generation of lasers at one of the world's leading manufacturers of advanced solid-state military lasers.

  • Experience in laser product development or laser research environments
  • Prior experience in owning a manufactured laser design
  • Proficiency in designing, characterizing, and manufacturing lasers using appropriate tools
  • Advanced understanding of laser physics and solid-state laser engineering
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electrical aspects of laser systems
  • Experience in laser research, development, or manufacturing
  • Skills in technical proposal writing, project budgeting, and team leadership
  • Strong analytical and modeling abilities, along with proficient laboratory skills
  • Knowledge of fiber laser systems
  • Qualifications: Essential - Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Physics). Desirable - PhD including significant laser design components
