Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Pharmacy Technician to join our team at Hayling Island & Emsworth PCN. As a key member of our primary care network, you will play a vital role in supporting the safe and effective prescribing of medication.

Main Responsibilities
  • Support Clinical Pharmacists and GPs in reviewing hospital-initiated medication changes, ensuring compliance with practice protocols and updating patient records accordingly.
  • Assist in the preparation of repeat prescriptions, participating in the daily preparation process to ensure safe and timely repeat prescribing.
  • Respond to medication queries from patients, staff, community pharmacies, and secondary care, providing accurate and timely information.
  • Contribute to the review and development of repeat prescribing protocols and Standard Operating Procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of repeat prescribing systems.
  • Prepare evidence-based resources and information to support prescribing, promoting the utilization of Electronic Prescription (EPS) and Electronic Repeat Dispensing.
  • Participate in and contribute to audits, including significant event audits, to ensure the highest standards of patient care.
  • Take a proactive approach to the safe handling of prescriptions, assessing risk and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Implement service changes relating to prescribing in accordance with local guidelines, legislation, safety updates, and NICE/MHRA recommendations.
  • Highlight medication errors or queries and report concerns to GPs/Pharmacists to support local clinical governance structures.
  • Provide training for practice staff on repeat prescribing systems, ensuring seamless integration and effective communication.
  • Comply with confidentiality and data protection policies, adhering to PCN and individual practice standards and guidelines.
  • Assist in the induction of medical students/registrars, promoting a culture of learning and development.
  • Establish effective working relationships within the Pharmacy Team and practice staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Undertake other duties as requested by the Partners or Line Manager, ensuring flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic healthcare setting.
Training and Personal Development

The post-holder will continue to develop their skills, knowledge, and undertake learning as appropriate. This will include participation in:

  • Annual appraisal and in-year reviews.
  • Training needs identified through appraisal, system improvement, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Mandatory training, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participation in PCN and whole-practice training, promoting a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
Communication

The post-holder will:

  • Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognizing the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding and ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment.
  • Effectively communicate with members of the practice teams and external agencies to meet patient needs.
Other Duties
  • Help cover staff holidays and sickness when required, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • Participate in practice and team meetings as required, contributing to the development of the PCN and individual practices.
  • Observe and comply with all appropriate statutory requirements in relation to Child and Adult Safeguarding, reporting concerns as necessary.
  • Keep up to date with and carry out duties in line with the IG Compliance Toolkit, ensuring the highest standards of confidentiality and data protection.
