Position Overview: The emergence of satellite mega-constellations in low Earth orbit is paving the way for comprehensive global monitoring of our planet. This role focuses on investigating the potential of utilizing mega-constellations for observing the interactions between the solar wind, magnetosphere, and ionosphere, thereby enhancing the field of space weather science and operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct innovative research to assess how satellite mega-constellations can significantly enhance existing capabilities.
  • Develop and implement data assimilation techniques for magnetic field observations from mega-constellations, validating these methods through advanced global magnetospheric simulations.
  • Apply findings to real-world measurements acquired from leading satellite constellations.
  • Contribute to the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project aimed at leveraging mega-constellations for global space weather exploration.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers at a prestigious institution.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in space physics or a closely related field, or equivalent experience in research, industry, or commercial settings.
  • In-depth understanding of the solar wind and its interactions with the magnetosphere and ionosphere.
  • Hands-on experience with various methodologies, including satellite data analysis, computational simulations, and theoretical modeling.
