Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Senior Traffic Signal Technician to join our dedicated team. This role involves the diagnosis, repair, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of specialized electronic and electrical traffic control systems within the traffic management framework.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct emergency repairs and ensure comprehensive maintenance of traffic signal infrastructure, operational integrity, and equipment replacement, available 24/7.
  • Adhere to all safety standards and VDOT policies while ensuring compliance with operational guidelines for electronic and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment.
  • Utilize available resources effectively to resolve work assignments, ensuring timely restoration of equipment to operational status.
  • Maintain an inventory of spare units and replacement parts to facilitate prompt repairs and minimize downtime.
  • Assist in bench repairs and collaborate with shop staff to procure necessary parts and equipment.
  • Execute work order requests based on priority and develop instructional materials to train staff as needed.
  • Perform regular system software database backups to support recovery from failures and incidents.
  • Respond to malfunctions of traffic signals, employing diagnostic tools to troubleshoot and repair a variety of electronic traffic control devices.
  • Monitor and adjust traffic signal timings, ensuring efficient traffic flow and safety.
  • Document maintenance activities and maintain accurate records in financial tracking and maintenance databases.
  • Oversee contractor work, conducting inspections and evaluations post-maintenance or upgrades.
  • Communicate effectively with the public and law enforcement regarding traffic signal operations and issues.
  • Prepare technical reports and logs, providing training on equipment operation and safety protocols.

Required Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of traffic signal operations and maintenance.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in electrical and electronic applications.
  • Familiarity with federal and state regulations related to traffic control systems.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Experience operating bucket trucks and working in confined spaces.
  • Physical capability to perform labor-intensive tasks.
  • Expertise in troubleshooting and repairing electronic equipment.
  • Proficient in using diagnostic tools and maintaining detailed records.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of management systems and timing plans.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and work flexible hours.
