Maintenance Equipment Operators are responsible for establishing work zones, managing vegetation, maintaining drainage systems, repairing road surfaces, snow removal, and conducting routine upkeep on machinery and tools. They are crucial during emergency situations such as severe weather and must be prepared to work outside regular hours when necessary.

Key Duties Include:

Equipment Operation – Utilize light, medium, and heavy machinery to execute maintenance and construction tasks effectively.

Safety Management – Recognize potential safety risks in the workplace and propose enhancements. Ensure the use of appropriate personal protective equipment and stay informed about safety regulations and procedures (including OSHA standards). Operate machinery safely and maintain a tidy and secure work environment. Adhere to safety protocols.

Emergency Response – Ready and operate machinery for snow and ice clearance or other emergency tasks. Clear roadways of snow, ice, and debris, and manage traffic during incidents.

Preventive Maintenance – Conduct repairs, replacements, and preventive maintenance on various tools and machinery. Perform pre-operation inspections on vehicles and equipment.

Physical Labor – Actively participate as a team member to achieve project goals. Engage in manual labor and other maintenance activities as required for project completion.

This role is essential for emergency operations and may require working during off-hours, weekends, and holidays in response to emergencies, including adverse weather conditions and disaster management to ensure public safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Understanding of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
  • Capability to operate and maintain machinery similar to that used in highway maintenance and construction.
  • Aptitude for performing strenuous manual labor.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions; effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining handheld and power tools.
  • Experience with light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
  • Capacity to obtain a CDL and DOT medical certification within 11 months of employment.
  • Compliance with DOT and VDOT standards while operating CDL equipment.
  • Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions and during emergencies outside of standard hours.
  • Safety footwear is mandatory.

Additional Considerations

  • Possession of a valid CDL with necessary endorsements.
  • Experience in heavy manual labor and operating equipment such as dump trucks, tractors, and loaders.
  • Experience in basic preventive maintenance and minor repairs of equipment.
  • Familiarity with highway maintenance methods and materials.
  • Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal and accident clean-up.
  • Flagging certification.

All new hires without a valid CDL must obtain their CDL within 11 months of hire. Operating commercial vehicles is prohibited until the necessary licensure and medical certification are obtained. This position is designated as essential and may require working outside normal hours, including weekends and holidays during emergencies. Travel may be necessary.

The Commonwealth utilizes a market-based pay program, which may not align with standard pay bands.
