Position: Assistant Transport Manager

Location: Purfleet

Salary: Up to £38k

Working Days: Monday – Friday (Flexibility required)

Role Overview:
We are in search of a proactive and experienced Assistant Transport Manager eager to embrace a new challenge. In this role, you will oversee and manage the driver workforce across Essex.

This position provides an excellent opportunity to enhance your knowledge and experience within the industry while collaborating closely with our operations team.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Assist in executing the daily logistics plan for all deliveries and collections, ensuring resource availability and keeping customers informed.
  • Manage an efficient driver roster, seeking opportunities to enhance area utilization and operational efficiency.
  • Monitor driver hours, vehicle cleanliness, and conduct vehicle checks.
  • Ensure all transport-related documentation is accurately completed, contributing to the company's transition towards a paperless operation.
  • Oversee safety-related investigations and audits to maintain a secure working environment.
  • Coordinate with Driver Training providers to ensure drivers are updated on training and monitor improvements in behavior.
  • Assist in investigations related to non-compliance.
  • Engage with customers regarding specific regional requirements for driver inductions, delivery qualifications, and vehicle allocations.
  • Travel independently to cover multiple depots as required.
  • Provide holiday cover for other Local Transport Managers as necessary.
  • Efficiently dispatch drivers with all relevant documentation.
  • Prepare correspondence, minutes, notes, and other clerical support as directed by the program manager.
  • Utilize initiative, tact, and diplomacy in addressing queries, escalating issues to senior management in the absence of the transport manager.

Candidate Profile:
  • Proven administrative skills.
  • A collaborative team player with effective communication abilities at all levels.
  • Approachable and dependable demeanor.
  • Experience in a busy transport office is desirable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a focus on customer service.
  • Familiarity with WTD, Drivers Hours, Tachograph, and transport legislation is preferred.
  • Ability to prioritize personal workload while contributing to team objectives.
  • Proficient in IT, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and CRM systems.
