Job Title: Mechanical Engineering Apprentice

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Mechanical Engineering Apprentice to join our team at the Medical Research Council. As a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, developing your skills and knowledge in mechanical engineering and machining.

Key Responsibilities:
  • To become proficient in the machining of components, including milling and turning on conventional and CNC machines in different materials.
  • To produce simple working models and drawings of projects using a design package such as SolidWorks and Fusion 360, and to keep accurate records of work.
  • To obtain a high level of competence in mechanical fitting and assembly skills, including the use of hand tools and marking out.
  • To produce precision components to meet mechanical design drawing specifications, using conventional and CNC machines supported with hand inspection tools.
  • To problem-solve associated manufacturing issues and collaborate closely with colleagues at all levels, advising on best practice and recommending ways of overcoming manufacturing obstacles.
  • To weld non-ferrous components using Tig welding techniques.
Working Relationships:

You will work under the direction of a member of the workshop staff and report to the Head of the Mechanical Workshop. You will work in collaboration with other members of workshop staff.

Additional Information:

You will undertake the Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship standard, which will include:

  • Practical skills, including hand fitting, turning, and machining.
  • On-the-job competency training.
  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence).
  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge).
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Machining.
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge).

Training will primarily be delivered and assessed in the workplace. However, attendance at West Suffolk College on a day release basis will be required. You must be willing and able to travel independently.

Person Specification:

Education / Qualifications / Training Required:

  • Essential:
    • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), including minimum Grade B/5 in Mathematics, and Grade C/4 in English and a Science.
    • Commitment to undertaking and completing the Machining Technician Apprenticeship.
  • Desirable:
    • Basic Engineering qualification.
    • Interest in Sciences.

Previous Work Experience Required:

  • Essential:
    • Excellent computer literacy skills.
    • Experience of working as part of a team.
    • Experience of using own initiative to prioritise workload.
  • Desirable:
    • Previous experience working with hand, power, or machine tools.
    • Evidence of developing practical skills from a previous project.
    • Ability to produce simple working drawings using Apple Macintosh or PC-based drawing package and the ability to write basic machine programs independently.
    • Experience using 3D printers, laser cutters, or similar technologies.
