Mechanical Engineering Apprentice

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineering Apprentice to join our team at the Medical Research Council. As a key member of our workshop staff, you will be responsible for developing your skills in machining, fitting, and assembly, as well as working on a range of projects to produce precision components.
Key Responsibilities- Develop proficiency in machining components using conventional and CNC machines in various materials
- Produce simple working models and drawings of projects using design packages such as SolidWorks and Fusion 360
- Obtain a high level of competence in mechanical fitting and assembly skills, including the use of hand tools and marking out
- Produce precision components to meet mechanical design specifications, using conventional and CNC machines and hand inspection tools
- Problem-solve manufacturing issues and collaborate with colleagues to advise on best practices and recommend solutions
- Weld non-ferrous components using Tig welding techniques
You will work under the direction of a member of the workshop staff and report to the Head of the Mechanical Workshop. You will work in collaboration with other members of the workshop staff to achieve project goals.
Training and DevelopmentYou will undertake the Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship standard, which will include practical skills training, on-the-job competency training, and completion of Level 2 and Level 3 diplomas in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and Machining.
Person Specification- Essential qualifications: 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), including minimum Grade B/5 in Mathematics and Grade C/4 in English and a Science
- Commitment to undertaking and completing the Machining Technician Apprenticeship
- Desirable qualifications: Basic Engineering qualification, interest in Sciences
- Previous work experience: Excellent computer literacy skills, experience of working as part of a team, experience of using own initiative to prioritize workload
- Desirable skills: Previous experience working with hand, power, or machine tools, evidence of developing practical skills from a previous project, ability to produce simple working drawings using Apple Macintosh or PC-based drawing package, experience using 3D printers, laser cutters, or similar technologies
- Creativity and initiative: Ability to demonstrate creative ideas
- Independent working: Ability to work on own initiative with minimum supervision, following given advice and training, ability to work to deadlines with a set timeframe
- Verbal and written communication skills: Effective written and verbal communication, ability to follow and understand instructions, ability to record designs and work on a computer
- Personal skills/behaviours/qualities: Ability to demonstrate and convey an interest and some basic technical engineering/machining knowledge and skill, ability to demonstrate the importance of learning new skills and knowledge to enable continuous improvement of themselves, self-motivated with good interpersonal skills, ability to work accurately and under pressure, demonstrates commitment and desire for the role
