Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Machining Technician Apprentice to join our team at the Medical Research Council. As a key member of our Mechanical Workshop, you will be responsible for developing machining skills and knowledge, working closely with our workshop staff to produce precision components and models.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Machining and Turning: Become proficient in milling and turning components on conventional and CNC machines, ensuring high-quality results and meeting design specifications.
  • Design and Modeling: Produce models and drawings using design software like SolidWorks, demonstrating a strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Mechanical Fitting and Assembly: Develop mechanical fitting and assembly skills, working efficiently and accurately to meet production deadlines.
  • Problem-Solving and Collaboration: Work collaboratively with colleagues to identify and resolve problems, demonstrating strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Weld non-ferrous components using Tig techniques, adhering to safety protocols and quality standards.

Training and Development:

As a Machining Technician Apprentice, you will undertake a structured training program, including:

  • Practical Skills Training: Develop practical skills in hand fitting, turning, and machining, with a focus on precision and quality.
  • On-the-Job Competency Training: Gain hands-on experience and develop competencies in machining, assembly, and welding.
  • Diplomas and Certifications: Pursue diplomas in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and Machining, enhancing your knowledge and skills in mechanical engineering.

Requirements:

  • Education: Minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics, English, and a Science, demonstrating a strong foundation in core subjects.
  • Experience: Previous experience working in a team and using own initiative, with a proven track record of problem-solving and collaboration.
  • Skills: Computer literacy skills, with a strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and design software.

  • Engineering Knowledge: A strong understanding of engineering principles, with a passion for mechanical engineering and design.
  • Scientific Knowledge: A solid foundation in scientific principles, with a keen interest in sciences and technology.
