Senior Clinical Psychologist for Heart and Lung Services

Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

An exciting opportunity has emerged for a Senior Clinical Psychologist to oversee the Heart and Lung Transplant Psychology Service within a prominent healthcare organization.

The Heart and Lung transplant service caters to individuals facing severe heart and respiratory challenges. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering a variety of assessments and interventions, including evaluations prior to transplantation and support for patients on the national transplant waiting list, as well as those who have undergone transplantation and individuals living with an LVAD.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in physical health environments, particularly in acute medical contexts. However, our primary goal is to find a psychologist who demonstrates the necessary enthusiasm and expertise to lead and enhance a top-tier service. There will be significant opportunities to provide direct psychological interventions while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.

This role offers a unique chance to connect and collaborate with fellow psychologists engaged in similar services across the country. You will be embraced by colleagues in the Heart and Lung Transplant team who are eager to support the ongoing development of the service. Additionally, you will be a valued member of our Clinical Health Psychology Service and the Psychological Professionals workforce.

Key Responsibilities

It is essential to exhibit a profound understanding of the psychological ramifications associated with heart and respiratory failure and how these may interact with pre-existing vulnerabilities. Given that transplant recipients remain under the care of the transplant service indefinitely, it is crucial to tailor psychological support accordingly, demonstrating flexibility in both outpatient and inpatient environments.

In addition to direct patient engagement across various modalities and settings, you will collaborate closely with medical professionals, nursing staff, and allied health practitioners to ensure high-quality care. Strong skills in consultation, supervision, and education are vital as part of our multidisciplinary approach.

Our mission is to deliver exceptional psychological care and support for both patients and staff, characterized by compassion and inclusivity. If you thrive in a challenging, creative, and dynamic work environment where psychological insights are highly valued, this position is well-suited for you.

This is a full-time position, and while there may be some flexibility in scheduling, attendance at a weekly Pre-Transplant Assessment meeting is required.
