Job Overview

The Camden & Islington Stop Smoking service, known as 'Breathe', is dedicated to delivering accessible and evidence-based solutions for addressing tobacco addiction. Our mission is to assist individuals in quitting smoking, thereby minimizing health risks associated with tobacco use and promoting overall well-being for our community.

In alignment with the NHS Long Term Plan, we aim to contribute to the vision of a 'Smoke-free society' in England by 2030. This initiative includes recommendations from the Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health and guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) regarding effective smoking cessation interventions, including behavioral support and access to nicotine replacement therapies.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting individuals within the borough who wish to quit smoking, contributing to a decrease in smoking prevalence and enhancing the health of the local population. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing evidence-based behavioral support and guidance to individuals seeking to quit smoking.
  • Delivering interventions through established community programs, individual consultations, and telephone support.
  • Promoting the service locally and collaborating with partners, stakeholders, and healthcare professionals to raise awareness and ensure high engagement levels.
  • Accurately documenting client information to enhance health outcomes and ensure quality care.
  • Offering educational resources and learning opportunities for multidisciplinary teams across the Addictions and Mental Health sectors.
  • Engaging with service users on both individual and group levels, while also collaborating with colleagues.

Job Duties

The primary responsibilities of this role include:

  • Delivering smoking cessation advice and support through established community groups, individual sessions, and telephone consultations.
  • Implementing smoking cessation strategies that adhere to evidence-based practices and national standards.
  • Utilizing motivational techniques to assess clients' readiness to quit and maintaining supportive relationships.
  • Collaborating with clients to develop personalized action plans and discussing suitable pharmacological options.
  • Engaging in continuous professional development to enhance knowledge of smoking cessation practices.
  • Building and maintaining professional relationships with various healthcare providers and community organizations.
  • Utilizing established monitoring tools to evaluate outcomes and quality of service.
  • Facilitating the transition of clients between different services and agencies.
  • Providing counseling on smoking-related issues using motivational interviewing and evidence-based techniques.
  • Conducting thorough risk assessments and ensuring effective risk management.
  • Adhering to local and national quality standards and protocols to deliver high-quality service.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care
  • Basic Level 2 in English and Maths
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development through work-based learning and mandatory training

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of nicotine replacement therapies
  • NSCT training
  • Certification in Life Coaching
  • Specialized training in Dual Diagnosis
  • Completion of DANOS compliant courses
  • Training in Motivational Interviewing

Essential Experience

  • Experience in smoking cessation services
  • Experience in developing individual care plans for recovery
  • Experience in mental health and/or addiction settings

Desirable Experience

  • Group facilitation experience
  • Volunteer experience in addiction and/or mental health fields
