About the Role

Keltbray Infrastructure Services Ltd is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Lead Principal Design Engineer to join our team in Preston Brook, Cheshire. As a key member of our Wentworth House Rail Design Team, you will be responsible for leading and managing technical and engineering activities within a specific engineering discipline.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage design activities in accordance with our quality management system, ensuring timely and budget-friendly delivery.
  • Undertake system, basic, allocation, and construction design of railway electrification in accordance with International, National, Railway Group, and Network Rail Company Standards.
  • Act as Checker and Approver of designs as appropriate.
  • Ensure the application of our Design Assurance process to all allocated projects.
  • Assist in determining design scope and preparing valuation of design elements during the tendering process.
  • Conduct site surveys and lead the team of engineers and technicians in producing design calculations and drawings.
  • Maintain coordination of feasibility studies, outline, and detailed design proposals.
  • Approve the work of design engineers and CAD technicians.
  • Manage the interfacing of allocated Design Teams with Construction and Commissioning Teams where relevant to allocated electrification design and construct projects.
  • Assist in maintaining Design Procedures to ensure they meet our quality and environmental procedures and current best engineering practice.
  • Undertake the role of Contractor's Responsible Engineer as required.
  • Undertake the role of Contractor's Engineering Manager as required.
  • Perform other duties and tasks allocated by the Company, within your capabilities, qualifications, and certification.
  • Undertake consultancy projects (feasibility, outline design, etc.) in the role of Senior Project Engineer.
  • Deputise as PHED as required.
Requirements
  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of proven railway electrification experience (15+ years if not Chartered).
  • Demonstrate application of and compliance to Engineering Assurance processes and requirements specific to the discipline.
  • Certification in CDM Regulations 2015 with a sound understanding of designers' and clients' requirements.
  • CEng status within a relevant Engineering Council Approved Body (IMechE, ICE, IET, PWI).
Desirable Skills and Experience
  • General overall competence in design as detailed by the Client.
  • Able to demonstrate meeting the performance and knowledge requirements of CRE01 as detailed in B.7 of NR/L2/RSE/02000/001.
  • Experience of reviewing works to ensure discipline technical requirements are met and relevant discipline standards are complied with.
  • Understanding of different engineering disciplines and their relationships and interdependencies.
  • Sound understanding of Network Rail's requirements regarding the Risk Assessment process.
  • Knowledge of Railway Group and Network Rail Company standards.
  • Understanding of safety, quality, and environmental issues relevant to the railway environment.
  • Knowledge of Rail/Civil design range applicable to current projects.
  • Able to demonstrate discipline-specific technical capabilities in line with an approved framework for that discipline.
  • Experience in generating Technical Queries (TQN), Requests for Information (RFI), Early Warning Notices (EWN), and contract variations.
  • Experience in Commercial and Design processes.
Personal Qualities and Skills
  • Possess good leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to direct technical resource and labour as required.
  • Ability to monitor compliance of delivery.
  • Ability to plan resources to meet programme dates and budget.
  • Ability to implement practices to meet technical requirements.
  • Time management.
  • Experienced in managing design and CAD engineers and teams.
  • Ability to read contract requirements and implement technical requirements specified therein.
  • Proven ability to prepare engineering documentation.
  • Experience in using Microstation and Projectwise (desirable but not essential).
