Nutritional Services Assistant

Part-Time Position

Role Overview

Under the supervision of the Nutrition and Dietary Services Manager, the Nutritional Services Assistant is responsible for preparing and serving meals to residents while ensuring the highest standards of food quality, cleanliness, and sanitation in the work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve meals to residents;
  • Uphold cleanliness and sanitation standards for all kitchen equipment;
  • Inform the Supervisor or Cook regarding low food or supply inventory;
  • Receive, label, store, and verify food and supplies in designated storage areas;
  • Prepare meals, snacks, and desserts for various dietary needs including regular, texture-modified, and therapeutic diets;
  • Ensure that food served is appetizing, at the correct temperature, and portioned appropriately;
  • Set up dining areas by arranging tables, filling condiment containers, and delivering food as needed;
  • Report any safety hazards to the supervisor promptly;
  • Clean the dining area, wash kitchen equipment, and dispose of waste properly;
  • Follow the established daily cleaning and work activity schedule;
  • Participate in staff meetings, committee meetings, and training sessions as required;
  • Assist in updating residents' nutritional records as assigned;
  • Help maintain records for dietary operations;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Food Handler Certificate;
  • Experience in institutional, healthcare, restaurant, or hospitality food service;
  • Alternatively, candidates may qualify through one of the following:
    – Students hired on a seasonal or part-time basis who have completed a food handler training program;
    – Individuals meeting the qualifications of a cook; or
    – Individuals with a post-secondary diploma in food and nutrition management or a degree in food and nutrition;
  • Additional educational requirements as specified in relevant legislation;
  • Experience in long-term care or healthcare settings, institutional, restaurant, or hospitality food service;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Bilingual in Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) is preferred;
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds;
  • Capability to maneuver a 500-pound food warming cart;
  • Willingness to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
