Senior Clinical Biochemist

Plymouth, Plymouth, United Kingdom University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

We invite applications for the role of Senior Clinical Biochemist within our Clinical Biochemistry department. This position is ideal for HCPC registered Clinical Scientists (band 7) or those nearing completion of their STP training (remaining on band 6 until fully qualified and HCPC registered).

The Clinical Biochemistry department is an integral part of our laboratory services, encompassing Automated Chemistry, Chemistry Special Investigations, and Point of Care Testing (POCT). Our team employs a variety of advanced laboratory techniques, including HPLC, ICPMS, and LC-MS/MS. As our POCT services expand, the successful candidate will primarily support this area while also having the flexibility to choose their specific focus. Participation in the Duty Biochemist rota is a requirement for this role.

In this position, you will engage in evidence-based clinical audits and research initiatives, collaborating closely with clinical colleagues across the Trust, including participation in multidisciplinary team meetings.

The Clinical Team maintains strong connections with the medical school, offering numerous teaching opportunities. You will be encouraged to supervise and contribute to the training of Healthcare Scientist colleagues and actively participate in local and national continuing professional development (CPD) activities, as well as pursue advanced professional qualifications such as FRCPath.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with BMS Section Leads, Laboratory Operational Manager, Principal/Senior Clinical Scientists, and Consultant Chemical Pathologists to deliver a timely, high-quality, and cost-effective service.
  • Ensure the efficient processing of patient samples, serving all patients attending our Trust and associated Primary Care Networks.
  • Oversee the department's annual testing volume, which exceeds one million tests, while managing a dedicated team of 123 WTE staff.
  • Develop and implement competency training and assessments for the chemistry laboratory team.
  • Conduct clinical audits and research projects to enhance clinical practices, making recommendations for improvements to clinical leads and managers.
