Position Overview

The Cardiology Clinical Trainee role is situated within the innovative Barts Heart Centre, part of Barts Health NHS Trust.

Barts Heart Centre integrates the previously distinct cardiac units, now unified to provide comprehensive cardiac care.

This facility serves as the primary heart attack center for the area, offering advanced invasive and interventional cardiology services, specialized cardiac imaging, electrophysiology including device implants and ablation therapy for arrhythmias, as well as care for congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, and heart failure. The position offers exposure to a diverse range of cardiology and medical conditions.

Key Responsibilities

The primary duty involves delivering daily care for cardiology inpatients, under the direct supervision of ward registrars and the assigned consultant.

The role includes participation in a comprehensive shift rota, which encompasses weekday, weekend, and night shifts, all supported by on-site registrars. The rota adheres to the European Working Time Directive.

This position is ideal for medical trainees who have completed foundational competencies and seek to enhance their experience in Cardiology. The year-long role is particularly suited for those with Core Medical competencies aiming to pursue Alternative Certification for Stage I General Internal Medicine training or ST4 training in Cardiology.

Job Duties

RESEARCH AND AUDIT

Established audit and research initiatives cover various aspects of cardiology, including electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, imaging, and cardiomyopathy. The post holders will have the opportunity to engage in projects of their choosing.

INFECTION CONTROL RESPONSIBILITIES

All staff are expected to adhere to Trust policies and infection control standards to minimize patient risk and ensure high-quality care.

Staff must undertake relevant training to ensure they possess the necessary skills and competencies.

Responsibilities include maintaining a clean and organized environment and addressing any concerns related to staff and patient safety.

Ensuring high cleaning standards is essential to prevent infections and enhance patient confidence.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential Qualifications

  • A primary medical qualification recognized by the General Medical Council (GMC) and current Full Registration with the GMC.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP).

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential Skills

  • Familiarity with the principles of the GMC's Good Medical Practice, including: effective clinical care, maintaining good medical practice, teaching and training, and professional relationships with patients and colleagues.

Desirable Skills

  • Current Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification.

  • Proficiency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking in English, enabling effective communication on medical topics with patients and colleagues.
