The electricity infrastructure in Great Britain is experiencing a significant and necessary evolution. In collaboration with industry partners, we are committed to developing a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy system that will benefit future generations.
The Energy System Operator (ESO) is seeking a Cyber Security Operations Specialist (DevSecOps) to join our expanding cybersecurity team. This role presents an exciting opportunity to design, implement, and integrate security measures within the broader transition to a DevSecOps approach throughout all stages of software development and deployment, aligning with the ESO Security strategy.
The Security Engineer will collaborate with our Agile DevSecOps initiatives to enhance visibility and integration for the Security Operations Centre, ensuring effective security processes across the organization. This role is vital for establishing a robust cyber defense in an ever-evolving threat landscape.
This position offers flexibility with the option to work in a hybrid model, combining office and remote work.

Transition to the National Energy System Operator
In the near future, the ESO will evolve into the National Energy System Operator (NESO). This new entity will be responsible for the planning and operation of Great Britain's electricity and gas networks.
As NESO, we will enhance our existing capabilities and methodologies to meet the needs of the energy system and its users. Our expanded functions will allow us to analyze various energy vectors, including electricity, natural gas, and hydrogen, while considering the interdependencies among them.
The organization will operate as a public corporation with an independent Board of directors, ensuring operational autonomy from governmental and commercial influences. NESO will be regulated by Ofgem, adhering to price control agreements and committed to identifying optimal solutions for sustainable and secure system operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and integrate security strategies into automated pipelines for both on-premises and cloud environments.
- Engage in hands-on scripting, coding, configuration, and development of security tools.
- Generate regular reports and dashboards reflecting security status, trends, and metrics, while integrating security incidents into automated workflows to mitigate future occurrences.
- Enhance collaboration with DevSecOps processes across the organization to improve the Security Operations Centre's detection and response capabilities.
- Stay informed about current and emerging DevSecOps practices to ensure the ESO remains a leader in the field.
- Work alongside Agile DevSecOps initiatives and engineering teams to activate effective DevSecOps capabilities.
- Advocate for stakeholder engagement to ensure DevSecOps methodologies are integrated throughout the development lifecycle.
About You
- Extensive knowledge and experience in security engineering, operations, analysis, and incident response.
- Proficient in DevSecOps methodologies, frameworks, tools, and automation integrations, including Ansible, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Git, and Terraform.
- Familiarity with security tools focused on DevSecOps, such as Kubernetes monitoring, log collection systems, SAST, IAST, and DAST.
- Experience in integrating DevSecOps workflows and tools with security monitoring systems to ensure adequate visibility for security operations teams.
- Proficient in scripting or programming languages (Python, Bash, PowerShell, etc.).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, capable of navigating complex and dynamic situations.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, able to convey information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Awareness of current and emerging cyber threats, trends, and best practices.
- Previous experience in delivering security operations engineering using Agile DevSecOps methodologies.
