Join the RCVS Ethics Review Panel as a Lay Member

We are seeking two experienced individuals to join our Ethics Review Panel as lay members. As a member of the panel, you will play a crucial role in reviewing research projects involving cats, dogs, horses, farm animals, and other species, ensuring that they meet the highest ethical and scientific standards.

About the Role

The RCVS Ethics Review Panel is responsible for reviewing research projects that involve animals, with the aim of ensuring that they are conducted in a way that is safe and respectful to the animals involved. As a lay member of the panel, you will work alongside other members, including ethicists, veterinary researchers, and veterinary nurses, to review applications and make decisions on whether the studies proposed are scientifically sound and meet the necessary ethical and legal standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review applications for research projects involving animals, ensuring that they meet the necessary ethical and scientific standards.
  • Work with other panel members to discuss and decide on the suitability of research projects.
  • Attend meetings of the Ethics Review Panel to discuss applications and contribute to best practice.
Requirements
  • Experience of professional regulation and ethics, ideally with a background in clinical veterinary practice or research.
  • Experience in reviewing applications for scientific soundness and ethics content.
  • Enthusiasm for evidence-based veterinary medicine and the advancement of veterinary science.
  • Good written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines.
