Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom University Hospitals Birmingham Full time
Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics to join our knee team. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in complex knee problems, trauma, and post-trauma reconstruction of the knee.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior post-CCT trainee to enhance their skills in managing various knee conditions. The appointee will have experience in general trauma and orthopaedics, with good communication skills to liaise with multidisciplinary teams.

The Fellow will play a crucial role in the knee team, with access to elective and trauma theatre sessions, as well as outpatient clinics. This will involve complex acute knee trauma and elective conditions. Elective surgery is based at the nearby Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

Applicants should have completed a recognised Orthopaedic training programme and have or be about to secure the CCT/CCST.

The Senior Fellow is a UHB developed arrangement to offer specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Part of the Knee Fellow's job is based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital - Northfield, Birmingham.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital are both tertiary referral hospitals, providing ample opportunity to manage patients with complicated knee problems, such as multi-ligament knee injuries and patello-femoral instability, along with major trauma and routine knee conditions.

Job Description

No on-call duties are required, but the Fellow will be expected to carry out 2 regular daytime shifts every 6th weekend.

The job involves independent operating lists. Towards the later part of the job, the Fellow will be expected to undertake independent lists consisting of joint replacement (e.g. TKR, UKR, PFJR); soft tissue operations (e.g. arthroscopy and ACL reconstruction); fracture fixation (e.g. IM nailing, ankle fixation, tibial plateau fixation).

The Fellow will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the team's clinical inpatient load, including pre-operative planning and post-operative care in conjunction with the consultant.

The Fellow may be expected to perform some weekend sessions with the knee team but will not participate in the general on-call rota. They will also be expected to provide some on-call cover during normal office hours to support the department but not at the expense of clinical exposure from the fellowship.
