About the Role

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is seeking a highly skilled professional to lead our Strategic Analysis team. As the Head of Economic Appraisal, you will play a critical role in advancing our understanding of the research and innovation system and delivering benefits for society, the economy, and the environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver insights into UKRI's portfolio and the research and innovation system, demonstrating how UKRI delivers government priorities.
  • Prepare evidence to support UKRI's multi-billion bids at fiscal events, such as Spending Review and subsequent allocations.
  • Improve the evidence base by leading analytical projects to address gaps in our evidence base and anticipate future evidence needs.
  • Respond to new strategic priorities and lead analysis to address them, ensuring UKRI's business cases for new investment are underpinned by robust economics and demonstrate value for money.
  • Lead and develop UKRI's economics and appraisal community.
  • Assess the research financial sustainability of the system by looking at universities, institutes, and other critical investments we and others fund.
Requirements
  • A degree or equivalent work experience relating to economics.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with a track record of developing evidence-based proposals and delivering high-quality analytical products that meet strategic needs.
  • Strong communicating and influencing skills, particularly communicating analytical findings to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience of leading analytical teams in a complex organisational environment.
