London, Greater London, United Kingdom Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced nurse to take on the role of Lead Surgical Oncology Nurse in Esther Ward.

The successful candidate will demonstrate clinical excellence and possess a comprehensive skill set relevant to the specialty.

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about enhancing quality care on the ward and can serve as a strong advocate for education and professional development. A confident educator, you will be adept at teaching a diverse group of individuals in various clinical settings and during ward-led training sessions.

About Esther Ward

Our ward comprises 24 beds, catering to a wide array of patient conditions. Operating under the surgical oncology directorate, we manage patients who have undergone ENT/Head and Neck procedures, Thoracic surgeries, and post-operative care for UAE/Interventional radiology cases, alongside supporting patients with sickle cell disease and other oncology and hematology complexities. We also provide care for patients admitted through emergency pathways.

Please note: We currently do not administer chemotherapy on the ward, and therefore, this position does not offer opportunities for learning in that area.

Main Responsibilities

Applicants should be either an existing Band 6 nurse or possess substantial experience as a Band 5 nurse within an oncology or surgical oncology setting. The ideal candidate will be proficient in airway management, including:

  • Tracheostomy and laryngectomy care
  • Pre and post-operative management
  • Complex wound care
  • Management of surgical and thoracic drains
  • Enteral feeding and venipuncture/cannulation/blood transfusions

As a Lead Surgical Oncology Nurse, you will encounter various leadership challenges and governance practices that contribute to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care.

Opportunities for further education will be available, and you will benefit from both in-house and external training programs.

We require a candidate with a solid understanding and proficiency in managing surgical drains, complex wounds, pre and post-operative patients, and administering complex medications, including PCA management, enteral feeding tubes, and blood transfusions.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, planning, and delivering specialized surgical oncology nursing care.

You will provide clinical supervision to other staff members and junior learners, including students and apprentice nursing associates. Your role will involve coordinating care on the ward and supporting team members, serving as a role model by upholding the Trust's values.

Participation in ward-based audits, contributing to clinical improvements, and ensuring the safety and well-being of service users will be key aspects of your role. You will promote dignity and human rights through person-centered care principles.

Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion is essential, and you will play a vital role in supporting the management team to maintain a culture of representation and inclusion for all patients and staff.

We are looking for individuals who are compassionate, dedicated, and focused on delivering exceptional quality care. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team are essential.
