Position Overview

We are seeking skilled Band 5 or Band 6 nurses to enhance our team on Esther Ward.

The successful candidate will demonstrate clinical excellence and possess a comprehensive skill set relevant to the specialty.

They will be motivated to elevate the quality of care on the ward and serve as a robust leader in education and professional development. A confident teaching ability is essential, as you will be responsible for instructing a diverse range of individuals in various specialties, both in clinical settings and during ward-led educational sessions.

About Esther Ward

Our ward comprises 24 beds, providing care for a wide array of patient conditions. Operating under the surgical oncology directorate, we manage patients recovering from ENT/Head and Neck surgeries, Thoracic procedures, post-operative UAE/Interventional radiology cases, and support for sickle cell patients and other oncology and hematology outliers. We also accommodate patients admitted through emergency pathways.

Please note: Chemotherapy services are not currently offered on this ward, and therefore, this role does not include this learning opportunity.

Main Responsibilities

Applicants should be either current Band 6 nurses or possess substantial experience as Band 5 nurses within an oncology or surgical oncology context. The ideal candidate will be proficient in airway management, including:

We are looking for enthusiastic, aspiring leaders capable of guiding and supporting junior colleagues in a dynamic, challenging, and highly rewarding environment that frequently cares for critically ill patients.

As a Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse, you will encounter various leadership challenges and governance practices on the ward, contributing to the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care.

Opportunities for further education will be available, allowing you to benefit from both in-house training and external programs.

We require an individual with a solid understanding and competence in managing altered airways (tracheostomies/laryngectomies), pre and post-operative care, including complex wound management, surgical drain management, enteral feeding, and venipuncture/cannulation/blood transfusions.

The post holder will need to be adept at managing surgical drains, complex wounds, pre and post-operative patients, and complex medication administration, including PCAs, enteral feeding tubes, and venipuncture/cannulation/blood transfusions.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be accountable for the assessment, planning, and delivery of specialized surgical oncology nursing care.

You will provide clinical supervision to other staff and junior learners, including students and apprentice nursing associates. Additionally, you will assist in coordinating care on the ward and support team members, serving as a role model by upholding the Trust's values and holding others to the same standards.

Participation in ward-based audits, contributing to clinical improvements, and supporting clinical excellence will be essential. You will also play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of service users by consistently working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person-centered care principles.
