Job Title: School Caretaker/Site Manager

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable School Caretaker/Site Manager to oversee the management and maintenance of our school premises. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the school environment is safe, secure, and well-maintained, contributing to a positive and productive atmosphere for students and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Site Security: Ensure the security of the school premises by locking and unlocking buildings, monitoring access, and maintaining security systems. Respond to alarms and incidents outside of school hours as required.
  • Maintenance and Repairs: Carry out general maintenance and repairs to the school buildings and grounds, including plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and painting. Identify and report major repair needs to the School Business Manager.
  • Health and Safety: Ensure that all health and safety regulations are adhered to, including conducting regular risk assessments, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with fire safety procedures. Organize and oversee regular fire drills.
  • Cleaning and Waste Management: Supervise the cleaning staff and ensure that all areas of the school are kept clean and hygienic. Manage waste disposal and recycling processes.
  • Grounds Maintenance: Oversee the upkeep of the school grounds, including gardens, playgrounds, and sports fields. Arrange for the cutting of grass, trimming of hedges, and removal of litter.
  • Facility Management: Coordinate the use of school facilities for external events and activities, ensuring that all users adhere to school policies and that facilities are returned to their original condition after use.
  • Resource Management: Manage the inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment. Place orders for new supplies as needed and ensure that all equipment is properly maintained and stored.
  • Contractor Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for external contractors and service providers, overseeing their work on-site and ensuring that all jobs are completed to a high standard.
  • Emergency Response: Act as the first point of contact in the event of an emergency on the school site, coordinating the response and liaising with emergency services if necessary.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and manage the site team, including cleaners and other maintenance staff. Provide training and guidance to ensure high performance and adherence to school policies.

Person Specification:

Experience: Previous experience in a similar caretaking or site management role, ideally within an educational setting. Experience in building maintenance, security, and health and safety is essential.

Skills: Strong practical skills in areas such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and general maintenance. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively. Good communication and leadership skills.

Knowledge: A solid understanding of health and safety regulations, including fire safety and risk assessment procedures. Familiarity with school operations is an advantage.

Qualifications: Relevant qualifications in building maintenance or a related field are desirable. Health and safety certification is also preferred.

Physical Requirements: The role involves manual work, including lifting, carrying, and working at heights. The candidate must be physically fit and able to perform these duties safely.
