About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Software Design Engineer to join our Engineering team at the National Physical Laboratory. As a key member of our team, you will play a crucial role in the design and development of innovative software solutions for our projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop modular LabVIEW architectures to support our engineering projects.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external clients to provide technical support and guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and NPL policies, following recognized best practices.
  • Conduct design reviews and make recommendations to the Chief Engineers for continued operations.
  • Maintain and design products and systems safely, following governance processes and preparing for review meetings.
  • Develop new embedded software, maintain software in existing products, and develop for associated production equipment.
  • Specify, perform, and document software testing.
  • Peer review code and documentation produced by the division's engineers.
  • Utilize NI Compact RIO/PXI chassis and modules.

Requirements

  • Be a Certified LabVIEW Developer.
  • Experience using version control tools, including Subversion.
  • Experience with GitLab/GitHub workflows and software development life cycles.
  • Strong understanding of software documentation management.
  • Experience with optical bench and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to engage with internal and external customers at all levels.
  • The ability to estimate development timescales and produce high-quality design documentation.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with FPGA and other languages, such as Python and C programming.
  • Experience with Linux systems.
  • Knowledge of using math simulation/analysis packages, preferably MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of electrical design.
  • Experience with software development.
  • An aptitude for geometry.
  • Interest in image processing and optical systems.
