About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Systems Engineer to join our Materials and Mechanical Metrology department at NPL. As a key member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on a range of instrumentation and metrology projects, providing technical expertise that informs our strategy and shapes our site infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Systems Leadership: Provide overall systems leadership for large and complex Science/Engineering projects, leading, coordinating, and managing all technical inputs to instrument design and development.
  • Design and Development: Develop design specifications, conduct design activities, and complete technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options.
  • Interface Management: Review, agree, and control External & Internal Interface documents and manage interface baseline.
  • Systems Analysis and Modelling: Apply end-to-end systems analysis and modelling, developing instrument performance models, manufacturing and alignment tolerances, and component specifications.
  • Technical Delivery: Manage the assembly, integration, and testing of systems and sub-systems of instruments and scientific products, and deliver complex hardware and software systems.
  • Documentation and Review: Document System Design, processes/procedures, and test results, and plan, coordinate, and deliver internal and external reviews.
  • Liaison and Proposal Development: Liaise with other specialists to ensure performance is maintained and requirements are met throughout the instrument development lifecycle, and generate and review technical proposals.
