Corporate Governance Lead
Join the Legal Services Board in a pivotal role as we collaborate with the legal services sector to implement our long-term strategy.
Our strategy is fundamentally aimed at transforming legal services to better align with societal needs, supported by our eight regulatory objectives.
We have pinpointed significant challenges within the legal services sector that require our attention to ensure equitable outcomes, enhanced confidence, and improved services for the public.
This includes enhancing access to justice and breaking down barriers to a diverse and inclusive legal profession at all levels.
With the advent of technologies such as AI and blockchain, alongside consumers' rising expectations for transparency, personalization, and cost-effectiveness, the legal sector is influenced by broader political, socio-economic, and technological trends.
As the regulatory overseer, it is crucial for us to anticipate and respond to opportunities and risks across the sector, and we seek an individual to assist us in achieving this goal.
By closely monitoring external factors, including political, economic, and regulatory changes, we will be better positioned to adapt and inform our policy development, regulatory oversight, and strategy execution.
Legal services play a vital role in serving consumers, our economy, and society at large:
- Approximately 7-8 million individuals encounter a legal issue annually.
- 30% of small enterprises face legal challenges each year.
- Estimated annual losses to small businesses due to legal issues reach £40 billion.
- About 1 million individuals experience health issues stemming from legal problems each year.
As the regulatory overseer for legal services, we are tasked with ensuring that the legal services market operates effectively for consumers and the public at large.
The Corporate Governance Lead is a crucial position at the core of our organization.
Reporting to the Director of Enabling Services, you will ensure that robust and appropriate corporate governance processes are established and followed, supporting the execution of our demanding work program.
Exceptional written communication skills are essential for providing a top-tier secretariat service to our Board, Audit and Risk Assurance, and Remuneration and Nomination Committees.
You will also advocate for best practices in data protection, information assurance, freedom of information, corporate governance, and more.
Maintaining strong relationships regarding governance matters with various external organizations, including the Ministry of Justice, Office for Legal Complaints, and Legal Services Consumer Panel, will be part of your responsibilities.
Your role will also encompass the effective management of corporate office functions, including the private office of the Chair and Chief Executive, as well as inquiries from the public.
The Corporate Governance Lead will manage a diverse portfolio of responsibilities, including:
- Overseeing the corporate office, coordinating communications with Board members between meetings, and serving as the primary contact for Board members regarding registers of interests, hospitality, remuneration, expenses, invitations, correspondence, and IT support.
- Maintaining the Governance Manual, developing governance policy proposals, and advising the Chair, Board, Committees, and colleagues on their responsibilities.
- Ensuring Board members receive adequate training, development, and briefings to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.
- Managing aspects of the governance relationship with the Office for Legal Complaints in accordance with our statutory obligations.
- Handling all facets of information management, including GDPR compliance, information assurance, and freedom of information related to corporate governance.
- Preparing the governance sections of the Annual Report and Accounts.
Additionally, you will oversee the Executive Assistant to the Chair and CEO, along with two Corporate Support Officers, and actively manage the team addressing inquiries from the public.
A solid understanding of public sector corporate governance requirements and best practices, ideally gained in a non-departmental public body, regulatory, or statutory environment, is essential.
Strong knowledge of information assurance principles and data protection, along with practical application skills, including advising colleagues on appropriate procedures, is also required.
Qualities and Characteristics:
Proficient computer skills with a good working knowledge of MS Office and experience with board portals and document management systems (preferably SharePoint) are necessary.
This position entails a 35-hour work week with a competitive salary, a defined contribution pension scheme with a 12% employer contribution, a benefits allowance of 10% that can be taken as salary, and an annual leave entitlement of 25 days in addition to statutory bank holidays.
Salary: Competitive, based on experience.
The Legal Services Board promotes a flexible working policy, allowing colleagues to choose between working from home, the office, or a hybrid arrangement.
The LSB is dedicated to reducing inequality, valuing diversity, and fostering inclusion. We welcome applications from individuals across all segments of the community.
