Job Overview

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is on the lookout for a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our esteemed Genomic Technologist Team as a Laboratory Support Technician. This role is essential in ensuring the smooth operation of our Genomics and Molecular Medicine service.

The responsibilities of a Laboratory Support Technician are diverse and encompass sample collection from various departments, management of specimen reception and referrals, as well as administrative duties including data entry and inventory management. Additionally, the role involves technical tasks such as DNA/RNA extraction and maintaining laboratory cleanliness.

The ideal candidate will possess strong motivation, excellent communication abilities, and proficient IT skills, with a keen eye for detail to adhere to established protocols accurately. While prior experience in an NHS clinical laboratory or familiarity with analytical techniques is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite as comprehensive training will be provided. A solid educational background with GCSEs in English, Maths, and Science (Grade A-C) or equivalent is required.

Please note that interviews will be conducted in person, as there will be a practical component to the selection process. Remote interview methods will not be available.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Receiving samples and accurately entering patient and sample information into the laboratory IT systems.
  • Performing routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment and workspaces.
  • Regularly defrosting and sanitizing laboratory fridges and freezers.
  • Monitoring and logging temperatures of incubators and refrigeration units throughout the laboratory.

The Genomic and Molecular Medicine Service operates within the Pathology Directorate at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust, contributing to a Local Genomics Laboratory alongside other leading institutions. This department merges cytogenetics and molecular expertise into a cohesive genomics laboratory service, fostering a collaborative environment with colleagues across various specialties.

Qualifications & Skills

Essential

  • GCSE grade C or above in Maths, English, and Science.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
