Job Purpose

Carnell is seeking a skilled Quantity Surveyor to join our team in a commercial management role. The successful candidate will report to and be supported by the Managing QS. We are looking for someone with a minimum of 3 years' experience in a similar role, with a strong understanding of civil engineering and highways.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and submit quotations for works on maintenance contracts, ensuring accurate pricing and submission.
  • Liaise with operational staff, including clients and subcontractors, to ensure effective communication and project delivery.
  • Manage scheme costs on the cost system (Nav13), raising queries where necessary, and ensuring accurate financial reporting.
  • Attend internal and external meetings, both electronically and face-to-face, to discuss project progress and commercial matters.
  • Manage the subcontract supply chain, issuing orders, assessing subcontract AFPs, and processing payments.
  • Conduct regular cost and value reconciliation through a monthly CVR process, ensuring accurate financial reporting.
  • Assess and submit quotations and compensation events, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Surveying degree or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • Experience working as a Tier 1 and Tier 2 contractor.
  • Experience with NEC3/4 and working on frameworks.
  • Experience with digital systems, particularly Microsoft.
  • Demonstrable record of supporting the commercial team in managing complex, high-value contracts.
  • Good knowledge of MS Excel and Word.

  • Enthusiastic and willingness to take ownership of contracts/frameworks.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with proven time management skills.
  • High levels of numeracy, written language, and communication.
  • Full UK clean driving licence.
  • Awareness of NEC 4 contracts and options would be desirable.
  • High level of attention to detail and a methodical approach to work.
  • Ability to analyse data and provide detailed reports.
