About Sustaining Engineering: This essential team focuses on enhancing various open source software by addressing software issues reported by users. The software landscape encompasses everything from the kernel to user space applications and IaaS platforms. In this role, you will lead one of our regional teams, working closely with other managers who report to the global Director of Sustaining Engineering.

Customer Impact: Our clients develop large-scale, mission-critical infrastructures and application solutions utilizing Ubuntu and Canonical's open source offerings. While not directly involved in product development, the Sustaining Engineering team, as part of Support Engineering, resolves challenges for customers and contributes to the broader Open Source community. The team is well-equipped with experts across all time zones, ensuring a healthy work-life balance and ongoing professional development for each member.

Your Role: As an Engineering Manager within the Sustaining Engineering team, your primary focus will be on the growth and satisfaction of your team members. You will ensure they are developing as engineers, making significant contributions, and enjoying their experience at Canonical. A strong technical background in software development is essential to support your team’s professional growth. You will have the chance to influence the workplace culture, facilitate technical delivery, and collaborate with your team on strategic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a distributed team of engineers.
  • Recruit, coach, mentor, and provide career development guidance to your team.
  • Oversee shift scheduling, monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), and provide training.
  • Ensure timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions across various technology domains, including Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, and MAAS.
  • Exemplify Canonical's values in customer interactions.
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  • Promote and advance modern software development practices.
  • Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  • Collaborate with other teams within the organization.
  • Work remotely with occasional travel for internal and external events.

Qualifications:

  • Proficient and experienced in three or more of the following: Ubuntu Linux (kernel or userspace), Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, deb or snap packaging.
  • Professional experience in software delivery using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar languages.
  • Strong knowledge and passion for software development.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to organize and prioritize complex problem-solving and bug resolution.
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
  • Experience with debugging tools like GDB, crash, or others.
  • Commitment to testing methodologies and maintaining high code quality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Experience with Linux, particularly Ubuntu.
  • Familiarity with Open Source and Open Source Business Models.
  • People management experience in a support organization is a significant advantage.
