About Sustaining Engineering: The Sustaining Engineering team plays a vital role in enhancing various open source software by addressing software issues reported by clients. The software ecosystem encompasses everything from the kernel to user space applications and IaaS platforms. This position leads one of our regional teams and is part of a broader management structure reporting to the global Director of Sustaining Engineering.
Customer Focus: Our clientele relies on Ubuntu and Canonical's open source solutions to construct large-scale, mission-critical infrastructures and applications. While not directly involved in product development, the Sustaining Engineering team, as part of Support Engineering, resolves challenges for clients and contributes to the broader Open Source community. This well-resourced team comprises experts across various time zones, ensuring a balanced work-life environment and ongoing professional development for each member.
Your Role: As an engineering manager within the Sustaining Engineering team, your primary focus will be on the growth and well-being of your team members. You will ensure they are developing as engineers, making significant contributions, and enjoying their experience at Canonical. A strong technical background in software development is essential for effectively guiding your team members in their professional journeys. You will have the chance to shape the culture, facilitate technical delivery, and collaborate with your team on strategic initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a distributed team of engineers.
- Recruit, coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback for career advancement.
- Oversee shift scheduling, monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), and conduct training.
- Ensure timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions across various technology domains, including Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, and MAAS.
- Exemplify Canonical's values in customer interactions.
- Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
- Promote and advance modern software development practices.
- Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
- Collaborate with other teams within the organization.
- Work remotely with occasional travel for internal and external events.
Qualifications:
- Deep interest and experience with three or more of the following: Ubuntu Linux (kernel or userspace), Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, deb or snap packaging.
- Professional experience in software delivery using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar languages.
- Strong knowledge and passion for software development.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in organizing and prioritizing complex problem resolution and bug fixes.
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
- Experience with debugging tools like GDB, crash, or others.
- Commitment to testing methodologies and maintaining code quality.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Experience with Linux, particularly Ubuntu.
- Understanding of Open Source and Open Source Business Models.
- People management experience in a support organization is a strong advantage.
