Key Responsibilities

You will assist the School Nurses in delivering a comprehensive school nursing service, working as part of an integrated healthcare team that encompasses primary care, mental health, substance misuse, and sexual health services. The Clinical Nurse Specialist is expected to be compassionate, responsive, and professional, enhancing the quality of our services by:

  • Ensuring the safety of the children through proficient clinical skills and thorough risk assessments.
  • Achieving optimal clinical outcomes by applying current skills and adhering to evidence-based practices.
  • Enhancing the experience of children by fostering respect, empowerment, and collaboration throughout the care planning process.

The postholder is expected to provide trauma-informed, culturally sensitive care, taking into account the developmental needs of the children and the impact of their experiences on their current strengths and challenges. Building strong therapeutic relationships with the children and their families is essential for this role and for the overall service delivery.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Conduct health assessments, manage clinics, and provide a range of health treatments and interventions tailored to meet the healthcare needs of children.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate treatment interventions based on clinical appropriateness and evidence-based models.
  • Provide clinical guidance to staff on health and wellness matters, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of relevant health issues.
  • Ensure high standards of care in a dynamic healthcare setting, with a focus on the needs of the children.
  • Foster excellent communication and collaboration with all stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • Participate in flexible working arrangements, including weekends and unsocial hours as necessary.
  • Implement processes and protocols for effective assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for children with physical and mental health challenges.
  • Safeguard vulnerable children in accordance with the Trust's safeguarding policies.
  • Apply local risk assessment and management protocols, ensuring sensitive and comprehensive communication regarding risk.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other services for long-term interventions.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary clinical practice to deliver focused and integrated care and treatment plans.
  • Collaborate with staff from other teams to provide coordinated care.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (Adult / Child / Mental Health / Learning Disability)
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development
  • Numeracy skills for safe medication administration

Desirable

  • Mentorship Preparation or equivalent
  • Willingness to pursue additional training specific to the setting and school nursing

Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience in community, education, or inpatient services as a band 5 nurse, student nurse, or healthcare assistant

Desirable

  • Experience working with children and/or adolescents and their families
  • Experience with diverse communities
