Are you an experienced Materials Engineer with expertise in manufacturing, welding, non-destructive testing (NDT), or corrosion? Do you enjoy tackling challenging engineering problems and aspire to take on leadership roles in complex design initiatives?
If this resonates with you, consider addressing the critical materials challenges faced by the energy sector across diverse clients. Your role may involve evaluating materials degradation risks and enhancing the longevity of operational nuclear facilities, innovating new applications, methodologies, and testing protocols for the fabrication and welding of next-generation reactors, and collaborating with designers and manufacturers to devise solutions for materials compatibility and production issues.
You will be engaged in supporting various projects, including the UK Submarine and Nuclear New Build programmes, as well as contributing to renewable energy initiatives aimed at achieving carbon neutrality. Given the dynamic nature of this role, the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently is essential. The consistent aspect of this position is the intricate nature of the tasks and the opportunity to deliver inventive solutions to a variety of challenges for numerous valued clients.
Regardless of the specific energy-related projects you undertake, you will be involved in crafting engineering solutions to some of the industry's most pressing issues, thereby making a significant and fulfilling contribution to the energy and environmental security of the UK and beyond.
If you are a proactive individual capable of managing several projects simultaneously, working closely with clients and internal teams to gather requirements, establish project frameworks, and deliver effective solutions for the most demanding challenges in the energy sector, we encourage you to explore this opportunity.
Key Responsibilities:
You will collaborate within small to medium-sized multidisciplinary teams. To leverage the collective expertise of the team and our clients, fostering innovative thinking, you will work in a collaborative and supportive office or site environment for a significant portion of your workweek. You may also operate from client locations or operational sites. A strong commercial awareness will be crucial as you work within these teams to effectively execute tasks across multiple workstreams, ensuring timely, quality, and cost-effective delivery.
Essential Qualifications:
- A degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Corrosion, or a related mechanical engineering discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
- Proven experience in addressing materials, manufacturing, welding, and corrosion challenges within the nuclear, conventional power, or offshore sectors.
- Experience in producing precise, detailed, and clear technical documentation relevant to the role (e.g., materials selection reports, fabrication and welding specifications, inspection and quality plans, corrosion/aging management strategies).
- Ability to engage effectively with existing and prospective clients, working on-site to understand their challenges, objectives, and processes.
- Design for manufacturing utilizing established models, design codes, procedures, and databases. Familiarity with design and construction codes such as ASME, RCC-M, or harmonized EN standards.
- Conventional machining, welding, non-destructive testing, and dimensional inspection.
- Understanding of materials performance and aging mechanisms in nuclear power facilities.
- Knowledge of coolant chemistry and strategies for mitigating oxidation/corrosion in reactor coolants.
- Experience in drafting bids within a safety-critical and heavily regulated environment.
- Chartered status with a relevant professional institution (or nearing application for registration).
The UK has set a pioneering Net Zero target by 2050, and our nuclear and clean energy teams are dedicated to ensuring a secure and sustainable energy mix that meets current and future demands. We are at the forefront of powering our world through innovative technologies and intelligent cybersecurity systems across projects of varying sizes and scopes. Your contributions will be vital in creating safe and resilient systems across nuclear power, renewables, decarbonization initiatives, new developments, and energy efficiency.
Additional Information:
This position may require security clearance, and employment offers will depend on obtaining the necessary level of clearance. If this is applicable, it will be discussed during the interview process. The vetting procedure is conducted by United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) and may necessitate candidates to provide proof of residency in the UK for five years or longer. Please refrain from mentioning any current or previously held security clearance in your application or CV.
