Position Overview

The Healthcare Engineering Trainee program at Gloucestershire Managed Services is designed for individuals eager to enhance their technical skills and knowledge while pursuing an Engineering Technician (Technical Support Technician - Electrical) Level 3 qualification.

Job Title: Healthcare Engineering Trainee

Department: Medical Engineering

Contract Duration: 42 months (+ 3 months for End Point Assessment), adhering to GMS Apprenticeship Terms and Conditions

Working Hours: Scheduled hours across a five-day workweek

Location: Primarily at designated healthcare facilities, with responsibilities at various GMS Medical Engineering sites

Important Note: This position is governed by GMS Terms and Conditions of Service (TCS) rather than Agenda for Change.

Key Responsibilities

The Healthcare Engineering Trainee will:

  • Follow structured training and guidance to successfully complete the apprenticeship within the designated timeframe while adhering to statutory requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to medical equipment regulatory standards and best practices by complying with established quality protocols in Medical Engineering.

Training and Development

Throughout the apprenticeship, the trainee will acquire and apply the following competencies:

  • Learn to perform safety assessments, routine maintenance, and minor repairs on medical devices.
  • Organize workload and prioritize tasks under supervision, maintaining high standards and compliance with policies and objectives to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Utilize computer skills to manage the asset management system, ensuring accurate documentation of activities and equipment details for both customer and managerial purposes.
  • Maintain safety protocols in the handling and upkeep of medical equipment, ensuring all items received are properly decontaminated, labeled, and sanitized prior to acceptance.
  • Diagnose and execute maintenance and repairs on medical devices.
  • Become familiar with various Planned Preventative Maintenance procedures, utilizing appropriate tools and equipment while understanding the interconnections between different systems related to the equipment.
  • Actively engage in the medical engineering management system, completing all necessary documentation, including job information and time records.
  • Commit to ongoing training to learn new techniques, particularly in specialized testing and maintenance procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with all staff levels regarding technical matters related to essential equipment maintenance.
  • Coordinate with department managers to facilitate access for equipment repairs and maintenance.
  • Continuously learn new techniques through additional training as part of the role.
