Position Overview

The Enhanced Support Team Nursing Support Associate plays a crucial role in assisting the nursing staff in delivering comprehensive and effective care to individuals with learning disabilities. This position involves collaboration with the team and various partner organizations to provide support to those at risk of requiring admission to specialized mental health or learning disability facilities due to deteriorating mental health or behavioral issues. The Nursing Support Associate will contribute to the implementation of the Building the Right Support initiative and assist in maintaining the Dynamic Support Register.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary team members to assess the needs of service users, develop care plans, and evaluate outcomes that empower service users throughout the care process.
  • Engage as a practitioner with a focus on mental health care and challenging behaviors in individuals with learning disabilities, contributing to national initiatives aimed at enhancing learning.
  • Assist the Advanced Practitioner in the growth and development of the Enhanced Support Team.
  • Facilitate the efficient operation and coordination of services while monitoring service activities.
  • Ensure adherence to clinical standards under the guidance of the Advanced Practitioner.

Work collaboratively with service users, caregivers, and other professionals to ensure the delivery of a service that is responsive to individual needs.

Staff Bank Overview

Our NHS staff bank is managed by the Trust and recruits both clinical and non-clinical healthcare professionals to fill shifts across our hospitals and community settings. We maintain a dedicated bank of specialized staff to ensure the provision of safe and effective care at all times.

All permanent staff are automatically enrolled in the staff bank, although participation in additional shifts is optional.

Clinical Responsibilities

The Nursing Support Associate will work alongside team members to implement all aspects of individual care planning, addressing both the physical and psychological needs of patients under the nursing team's care.

Key clinical duties include:

  • Acting as an associate worker for service users.
  • Leading the delivery of care pathways related to mental health and challenging behavior.
  • Documenting accurate and objective information, ensuring it is signed by the appropriate staff member.
  • Establishing and maintaining therapeutic relationships with service users, their families, and caregivers.
  • Ensuring effective and confidential communication while maintaining strict confidentiality regarding patient and colleague information.
  • Recognizing the needs of caregivers of individuals with learning disabilities.
  • Understanding and implementing the Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Act safely.
  • Participating in the planning of care for each service user in accordance with established pathways and standards.
  • Observing and reporting any changes in a patient's physical condition or mental state appropriately.
  • Creating a calm and supportive environment for patients.
  • Building positive professional relationships with patients, treating them with respect and dignity.
  • Participating in managerial supervision.
  • Developing networking opportunities with stakeholders to support community care and facilitate timely hospital discharges.
  • Collaborating with other mental health providers to enhance accessibility for individuals with learning disabilities.

Training and Development

The Nursing Support Associate is expected to identify personal development needs and discuss them with their supervisor, setting targets through the individual performance review process. Commitment to professional growth is essential.

Responsibilities include:

  • Highlighting educational opportunities to supervisors.
  • Sharing knowledge and feedback with colleagues after completing relevant courses.
  • Serving as a positive role model for colleagues and students, supporting their development.
  • Contributing to audit and research initiatives at the ward level.
  • Liaising effectively with multidisciplinary team members, service users, and their caregivers.
  • Participating in standard-setting activities.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications:

  • Foundation degree.
  • UK driving license with access to a vehicle for work purposes.

Essential Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the health needs of individuals with learning disabilities.
  • Familiarity with policies governing current practices in learning disability services.

Essential Experience:

  • Experience working in community settings.
  • Experience supporting individuals with learning disabilities.
